Thank you Ochanomizu.

I usually use Google translate but have never noticed any indication as to whether its coming from a smoke free environment or not.

Hello Mr Minelayer,

It is about the Yahoo Auctions, such as this one about to end: http://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/156213248

Many vendor will state non-smoking.  Kanji is 禁煙

By the way, if I did not already have two of this item I would be tempted to buy that one myself.

A friend of mine overseas bought Tomix, MicroAce and Kato.  EMS shipping was 5400円 ... more than the cost of the catalogs too.  This year, he made a trip to Japan and bought all, including modelling magazines.  He announced that he saved over 17,000円 in shipping !!! That's a whole train!!!

If my calculations are correct it would be cheaper for me to buy a catalog from Yahoo Japan using a 3rd party service. For example:

Cost of catalog Y1700

Approximate cost on top of purchase price = .40% from third party.

Y1700 X .40% = Y680+1700=y2380

Y2380 = approx $25

It may take a while longer to eventually get to me but I'm saving quite a bit.

Anyone see any errors in my example?

2012-13 catalog is 1800 yen at hs, not seeing where you are getting a savings. i think most of the yahoo services the 40% only covers the shipping to them and their costs and does not include the shipping to you.

on the catalogs its the shipping to you that is the big killer, usually as much as the cost of the catalog sal, double that for ems...

Mokei Imports in st louis use to bring in catalogs and we could get them through dealers that bought from him for like $20 shipped. but alas, he retired and closed the business last year...

I agree the cost of the catalog at HS is 1800 Yen, but that doesn't include the cost to ship either.

If I order two catalogs from HS, say MA and Tomix, cost of the catalogs come to 3780 Yen. Add on shipping of 4700 Yen and I'm looking at approx $45/catalog.

Based on my recent experience with SMJ, and obviously based on recent currency exchange rates, the cost to ship to their US location is approx .38%+ shipping to my residence adding another .2%.

If this remains to be the case then  I would experience substantial savings using SMJ.

Ray,

does the 40% fee for the auction cost include shipping to you? i always thought that the shipping from the service to you was just what ever it cost in addition to the 40%. it was not really clear on smj's website what/if bundled shipping charges there are.

smj looks like would be $6 fee on a catalog so if that did get it to your door that would be fantastic. but you cant ship a catalog from their us warehouse to your door for that much these days except by media mail for $3. a small train car would be $5 as its priority mail now. so that leaves them with $1 to ship from japan and overhead, time, profit, etc. just dont see how the deal can work

i assumed their service fee was only for the bidding and paperwork etc and shipping was all on top of that--you decided what you wanted for shipping (ems, sal, surface, or their bundle/warehouse) and paid for that separately.

have you ordered thru them and they just tacked on the service fee to the total (product+japanese shipping to them in japan) and that included shipping to you all the way? something seems too good to be true here.

Hey Jeff,

I see where my calculation error occurred.

I just recently used SMJ for the first time and they give a promotional commission free transaction on your first purchase (up to Y10,000).

Knowing that using a service like SMJ is pretty expensive it didn't make sense that using them over HS was cheaper, hence the inquiry, but it makes more sense now.

Thank you for engaging in the conversation to clarify things Jeff.

That being said, it looks like $45/catalog will have to do for now...unless the exchange rate continues to move in our favor. Ideally I would wait until my next trip to Japan before buying these catalogs but then I wouldn't be able to do sufficient "research" before getting there. :)

Ray,

No worries, I started to get a little excited there, but was too feeling too good to be true!

I did find a post in the auction thread outlining the regular SMJ charges.

I've sort of stopped getting catalogs as I found I was not looking at them as much over the years (of course when I was starting out they were my drool books and wore them bare). Mokei was great as they were much more affordable than shipping from Japan!

Before bob sadly passed away at bttrains, they were starting up a shipping service that was only 20% fee and good bundled shipping On their order pallets. They were also starting to bring over the catelogs and sell them at a good price. They do have 2011-12 kato and tomix catalogs for $20

Have fun drooling!

Written in a little note below the latest HS newsletter was that these two items are being sold at 50% off now:

Thanks Densha! I think you got both the links on the same item. The other i think you are referring to is this:

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10065601

Which i already have so it's a pass for me. It's quite a nice set to get though, especially at this price!

It is the only time to use these services.  Other time, better to stick with supplier offering regular discount and excellent service.

Actually, the bargain product offered by HS is not so popular or desirable.

I think what they are doing is trying to sell off products that are not being sold for a long time to clean up space, so indeed not popular.

HS bargain table takes patience, about once a year something pops on there that i want and get it really cheap! kind of like lurking ebay for something. if you want a deal usually takes time waiting for the right one at the right time to come along!

Hi guys!

HS listed alot more bargain items today (or last night) : http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/list/758/0/1

Quite a number of Hanshin GreenMax trains and Keio trains up for grabs!

Not too appealing still to me except for maybe one train the Eiden Subway 3000: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10186833, but i think those looking for the Hanshin and Keio trains, and the cute whale train should act now!

Guys,

I would just like to point out that HS was great in replacing my busted Kato double crossover with a new one.

When I noticed the problem, I emailed to ask if they can help me to possibly fix a non-working switch point if I open it up. They just replied back and said they'll replace it for free.  :)

Seems like they've done a few already eh? Lol!  They probably have not yet ironed out all the bugs, so replacement issues may be high.

Still, good to know that kato stands behind their products.
