Martijn Meerts
I finally picked up some new train related stuff as well. It's not Japanese though ... I bought a Lenz 0-scale starter set at the (semi-)local hobby store. It contains a locomotive, 3 freight cars, an oval of track and a turnout. I went for the set without the digital command station, because I already have one from Lenz. To get an idea of the size, the oval is kinda like a standard oval you get with any starter set. In 0-scale the oval is 1.9 x 3.5 meters just about. The turnout alone is almost half a meter long. The track is also weather proof, so it would be possible to use it in the garden, but the trains would need a nice little shed for rainy days. The locomotive comes with a DCC decoder built-in (as is to be expected from a Lenz model.) It's based on their top of the line decoder, but customized specifically for the loco. There's the standard direction dependent light, shunting lights/speed and all the other nice DCC stuff. It also comes with synchronized sound and several sound effects. And it also has a remote controlled coupler, so you can uncouple anywhere on the layout. The cars are standard 2-axle freight cars, but they weight around 300-350 grams each. The come with Lenz's own coupler system by default, but you can replace those with (included) prototypical couplers. Detailing of the cars and the loco are incredible. I'll definitely post some pictures after I take them =) The only thing I'm missing is some sort of simple smoke generator. It's a diesel loco, so there should be smoke. Then again, I've never been much of a fan of model smoke, because it looks terrible. Except of course for the dynamic smoke system of KM1. There are rumors (more like wishful thinking) that Lenz might license the KM1 smoke system, because the 2 companies already seem to be working together on a turntable for both 0-scale and 1-scale. Example of dynamic smoke (just skip the initial v100 blowing standard, crappy looking smoke, and get ready for the steamer ;)) : Link to comment

to2leo
Any ideas? MB Klein's policy on defective Kato stuff is that you talk deal with Kato USA directly. Being in Canada I'd have to pay shipping and then potentially labor for Kato USA to try and fix a foreign prototype. My other option, due to a lucky break, would be to order a replacement motor unit myself - the E233-1000 shares the exact same motor part (4731-1SB) as the Chuo line E233-0 I was just investigating. HS has this in stock for $22 (it's used to motorized the Chuo 4 car addon set) I would try calling MB Klein then Kato USA and see what are your options. Unfortunately the warranty will not get you free shipping. Perhaps they will suggest just sending the parts and not the whole set. Link to comment
jappomania
Just a new gift (for myself ) From Spain one Swiss Kato RAbe to couple with the old RAe and one TGV Duplex just to complete the TGV fleet (so now I can destroy the old Hobbytrain sets that run very poor and have a shitting coupling) From Japan the Viva Aizu and some kato locos and freight cars ciao Massimo Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
^^^ HEY this is the N gauge forum!!! Yeah, but in a few years from now, the dynamic smoke will have been miniaturized, and fit into N-scale Link to comment
scott
(so now I can destroy the old Hobbytrain sets that run very poor and have a shitting coupling) Noooooooooo!!! The RAe/RABe are among my favorite trains, but the models are very expensive here--don't destroy the old ones! Send them over here, and I'll, ahem, dispose of them for you! Link to comment
KenS
It never rains but it pours... In addition to the Viva Aizu Series 485-1000 I'd ordered from stock on Thursday, two preorders at HS just became ready for shipping: my set of the new Kato buildings, and my Kato E3 Komachi set. Now the waiting begins... The good news is that I only have one other preorder outstanding, a Sobu E231 (and expansion) I ordered back in February. The bad news is that it's due next month, when I'll still be recovering from this month. Such hardship. Now I really need to finish my track... Edit: fixed a typo. Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
Just ordered a compressor, airbrush and ultrasonic cleaner. Spent more than I was planning, but oh well =) I'm still VERY tempted by the 300 series shinkansen. I've managed to not order it for a long time, but the "NEED THAT TRAIN!" voice is starting to take over. (Although, said voice is also saying I need more 0-scale stuff and the 0-scale turntable building kit etc. etc. etc.) Must ... Resist ... (at least until I get holiday money ) Link to comment
IST
I'm still VERY tempted by the 300 series shinkansen. I've managed to not order it for a long time, but the "NEED THAT TRAIN!" voice is starting to take over. Same feelings here. I have just paid for a Yamanote Line moneybox, some Kato trees and a "Home delivery" set from PJ. And took an order from HS, but I am still waiting for the invoice to pay. Link to comment

IST
My package has just arrived from Hobby Search. I did not know that there is EMS posting in Sunday, so it was a great surprise. Now I have a big box in the living room which contains a green Portram, 4 Kato office buildings, a large office building from Tomix, 2 turnouts, 1 power pack, a long engine shed and a magazine if I remember well. But the box is closed until 11th July. My wife does not allow to open it as these will be my birthday presents. Aaaaargh! Link to comment

I've been waiting for these since I got a stock out last October. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10007583 Link to comment

scott
Just got two more Tomytec Portrams (yellow and orange this time) from HS (they were on sale for cheap)--no motors yet, but that can wait. Also, three really nice Kato modern SBB coaches from eBay for about $12 each--new price is closer to $40. Link to comment
westfalen
According to the Australia Post tracking website my Kato EF510 500 should be at the local post office for me to collect in the morning. Now I've just got to get a train for it to pull Link to comment
KenS
My pair of Kato DE10 locomotives arrived yesterday, along with several KOKI 104 and KOKI 106 container flat cars (the KOKI's will be pulled by my EF210, not the DE10s). I'd been waiting for the DE10s to restock since I missed the original release last fall. Link to comment

Eliphaz
The Hobby search sale has been gnawing at me, and I finally decided what I wanted. Ive always wanted to get into brass loco kits. I like electric locos, and this is a great kit at a great price. I may not finish it in my life time, but I will always treasure it... edit to add: I may be needing help from some of you here with the instructions !!! Link to comment
David
Speaking of brass, reservations are open for a World Craft brass Deki 3 for about $50. I'm wondering if the motor unit is included. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10121866 http://www.hwjapan.com/sh/WAR2010071201.aspx Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
Eliphaz, that sure isn't the easiest model to start with =) Looks like a great model though. Myself, I just ordered 6 cd's and 1 dvd by the always excellent Maaya Sakamoto, which has nothing to do with trains.. Although, there's always a change she likes trains of course =) Link to comment
