Kato - New Releases

Quick question about the Kato Twilight Express that was re-released this month: why did it sell out so fast?  It seems to be gone from the usual places (hobby search, amiami, etc.) Is it a more popular model than Kato's other sleeper trains, or...?

I didn't bother pre-ordering, which was a mistake, I guess.  :icon_scratch:

Hazarding a guess that they tend not to do a Goodbye type set like Tomix does, so this will be just as close I guess?

Cos it hadn't been released for 3 years prior. Yes not pre-ordering was a mistake. Especially Kato models.

The prototype's being discontinued, so there is a high amount of interest right now.

FWIW, I have studied both the Kato and Tomix models of this train as hard as I can from pictures (and I own the Tomix, as a control for the pics I've looked at), and while they both have strengths and weaknesses, I believe the Tomix to look closer overall to the real thing. And it's pretty easily attainable.

The latest Tomix Twilight Express is an improvement over previous releases and is objectively an excellent model.  I just happen to prefer the Kato Twilight Express EF81's detail parts and paint, plus the rest of my sleeper trains and EF81s are Kato.

As for the Twilight Express' popularity right now, your explanation certainly makes sense.

There will be a Limited Edition Sayonara/Goodbye version released. Wait for it if you are happy to wait.

Is Kato really still in the habit of releasing sayonara versions?  I know they did one for the Asakaze, but that was ten years ago.

Plaza Japan still has them if you are happy to pay full retail.

You are right about Kato doing (or not doing) a Sayonara version.

Hello Mr katoftw,

So sorry, but I have not seen any such announcement.  Could you please provide a link?

Hi all,

May i know the list of shinkansen series that have ever been produced by Kato? from the very first model.. thanks

Well, I'm not sure they have a list including discontinued models, but you can go to http://www.katomodels.com/product/index.shtml and paste 新幹線 into the search field.  Honestly I think all the manufacturer websites are somewhat difficult to navigate.  I'd like to see a list of everything they've ever built, too.

Hi Miyakoji,

Thanks for the link. I will check soon. Anyway, that's why I addressed such question here.. just in case one of the forum members had the list.. :) thanks

Kato have rejigged their release schedule. Bock to having a few months in advance. Mr Kato must be happy with the factory production again to commit to timelines again.

My SL D51 498 and Series 12 Coaches though have been pushed back to April or later from originally Feburary. Which means I can budget for building and scenery in Feburary instead. Silver lining to that cloud.

Also some Seibu models announced. The E851 is a nice looking loco.

I've already got 2x DE10 and 4x DD51's, wondering what newer single Unit diesels will KATO will release lol But before that I need to clear out my waiting order list so I can go back and save money.

I think the DE10's and DD51's in JNR livery have always been available somewhere, so I don't see any reason to suddenly start hyping... :P
