Happy with my 4 and 6 car sets, anything much longer gets tedious to get out of the box and put on the track.

Mind you I can go and see the real thing any time I want :D

Hm, I received a letter from the customs office to declare what secret stuff I've bought in Japan.... :/

Means you print out your Paypal Bill and hand that over...

I 'love' when that happens. Especially when the outside of the package actually contained all invoices to process it through customs.

Thanks, Zoll FRA.

Oh Germany and your everlasting visits to the customs office... How I don't miss that xD

Same situation is here, but since 2-3 years they accept documents via e-mail, so we do not have to go to the customs office personally.

In Germany too. Unless you aren't home. In my case I have to travel for 30 minutes one way and spend 20 euro to go to the nearest customs office.

In Japan they put a note in your letterbox with a number to call for redelivery at your convenience :D

Come to think of it I remember trailing out to the Zollamt in Tempelhof once many years ago, albeit not for anything railway-related.

In the US they just rip the box open and then it sits in Jamaica, New York for a week. I guess they though the chlorine tank cars I ordered contained real chlorine...

Testing the waters of Buyee again, I ordered a kato EF65 500 form.  Model 3017, so it appears to be an older version, but it seems to come with knuckle couplers and was only 2300 yen!  It should go well with my 20 series sakura blue train, at least until I can order the newer kato ef65s and ef66 that's coming out soon.

The release dates set by the manufacturers are the dates the product departs the manufacturers warehouse/factory.  So retailers normally get them late that same day or the day after.  So you need to allow time for this from the retailer before they make contact with out.

Freed from the claws of customs.

BTW, is it only in Cologne that the customs office is exactly as far from the center of the city as is possible at all by geometry?

And, you were right. It *was* declared correctly on the outside....

Nope, Bonn same thing. All the way on the other side of friggin' town (almost in Bad Godesberg IIRC).

In Berlin it used to be in the city center. Bad for people like me who live on the outer edge. Even though it was in the center you were in for a considerable walk when using public transport. Going there by car was an equally bad idea.

Being the only import customs office in Berlin handling mail it was accordingly busy and overcrowded. Luckily they learned and opened branches. Even more lucky for me, the North-East branch office is only 3 km away.

Another parcel dropped off from Ami, using DHL function that was delivered on 29th Jan, which is not only the 2nd day of Chinese New Year, it is also a Sunday! Amazing... Seriously, this crashes EMS flat on... If it was EMS, it probably wont be delivered on a holiday nor a Sunday...

How does EMS compare to DHL in terms of delivery time vs price then?

Also, what is the difference between the old and the new 885 that KATO makes? (As I am thinking of getting the same one)

As an easy comparison, EMS charged me 2400 yen and DHL charged me 1900 yen as quoted by Ami for this parcel.

Assuming that both EMS and DHL will ship the parcel on the 27th. (DHL shipped it out of Japan on the 27th)

Usually, EMS will take 2-3 days, minus public holidays and Sundays. That means, if the parcel arrives in Singapore on a public holiday or Sunday, it will still have to wait till Monday or sometimes even Tuesday for the parcel to actually reach me..

DHL quoted me the ETA for the parcel as 31st Jan, but I receive an email and a SMS on 29th telling me that the parcel will arrive at my place today (29th) before 6pm... That's amazingly fast considering 29th is both a public holiday and a Sunday! It would also seem that through tracking, the parcel just arrived in Singapore the night before 28th (which was also a public holiday) and it was dispatched the next day.

That means, in this situation/ instance, it would seem EMS would have delivered the parcel on 31st, the next working day as 30th is also a public holiday (fastest) or even today, 1st Feb. That would show that EMS was outperformed by DHL both in terms of pricing and speed this time...

As for the difference between the old and new 885, i'm afraid I cant tell you more on this as I don't have the older 885...   :(
