Kato - New Releases

I checked: My E4 does not have another shaft or opening for a second powered bogie. The bogie on the other side does have the shaft and opening for it. All bogies look exactly the same, too. I also found out that my version is from 2012, according to the box it came in.

Hi Yavianice

My kato E4 was bought as a starter set in about 2009. The motor car only has one driven bogie which is different to all the other Kato shinkansens I own. The power car on the E4 is a fair bit heavier than other models and I've not had an issue with traction. I wonder whether this was done due to the off centre motor to allow the lower deck to be modelled effectively.

This is all very tempting and making me very much tempted to get a Kato E4 Max even though I already have Tomix made E4 Max in both colors ...

Why get a KATO E4 then? What is the benefit of having a KATO E4 over the TOMIX version?

While the KATO E4 is very tempting, I am waiting patiently for TOMIX to release some kind of special edition of the E4 at some point as the E4 will be retired next year.

Well, there are just a few gadgets on the Kato that is missing from the Tomix, but the number one loveable factor is that the Kato motor car for the E4 looks EXACTLY the same as the other cars; i.e. the motor is hidden! Tomix ones got a really ugly motor block that can be seen from the lower deck...

That huge block kinda gets to me long enough when I look at the Kato E4...

Then there is the printed destination signs, and the openable front coupler like the real thing. While it is a huge hussle to actually open and close that coupler cover, it looks REALLY good when opened, far better than the Tomix one:

Tomix did do a special color E4 Max that was only sold in Tomix World at Omiya, the E4 Max with the Ibis logo:

But other than that logo, nothing's much different from the regular one...

I do hope to see a special painting one on the E4 max, but the only one that is 'special' will most probably be the Pokémon paining:

And I haven't seen another livery for the E4 Max...

I doubt they will do the Pokemon livery due to licensing.

Wow, you are right about the power car. Though maybe TOMIX will change that in a new release. I will wait patiently...

Same here. Plus my E3 is Tomix so there's that too. I already have the destination board stickers from Geomatrix that just got rereleased so I already them for the E4 when it is rereleased. Just hope it's in the old color, I don't care much for the color scheme on the new one.

Announced for MoRaCo 2017: https://www.moraco.jp/blank-1 MaYu 50 2186 (@¥3,000). A coupler car in the Resort Express Yu livery, mainly used for hauling empty stock. A must have for service runs!

So that's what that is. Saw it parked at Mito last September.

It's main purpose was to haul the Resort Express Yū over non electrified lines, but due to the limited runs in that kind of fashion, this car sees much more use as a medium between Janney and Shibata equipped rolling stock. It's a weird, but neat little car, but it would find a purpose on any JR East layout, as IIRC it has traversed almost the entire network (if not everything).

It doesn't look like it will be made available through the common retailers access... maybe only at Kato Hobby Centre?

Usui Tōge specials announced because of the 20 years anniversary of the closure of the line: http://www.katomodels.com/product/poster/files/2017_9b.pdf

Also, more interesting releases here: http://www.katomodels.com/product/poster/files/2017_9a.pdf Especially the M250 Series and the KiHa58 soundcard (DMH17 engine sound) will probably be in high demand! The little S124 dummy railway crossing also looks nice.

Interesting and attractive M250! But I will NOT go into freight... no no no...

It's an EMU in a semi-fixed consist with a fixed type of container, so it's basically the same as a passenger train. No need for extra engines, wagons, etc. when you have one.

You said that about Kyushu also.  I give it a week and you will have buckled...

Whew, EF63, DD51, D51, 12 and 115 series, ED62, M250 and a new crossing!  Guess I should start selling off my other scale models, September is really guna hurt my wallet.  Almost 20000 yen for a 6 car 115 set seems a little steep though.  Hasn't 498 already been released?  Whats the difference with this new D51 model, as it seems it has a new product number.  Also what does the text say on the new crossing, it looks pretty nice.

Edit:
Didnt see the second page, an EF62, Brown EF63, 489 and 189?  Wow, kato went all out on this release.

September has all gone a bit Usui Pass.

I will have to get a couple more EF63s as i love these things pushing my 189 series Asama around. Nice to see them finally from Kato in brown and I'll probably look at getting the grade up Asama as well.

Be interested to see how these differ as I own 2 different EF63 models and an EF62 from kato. I hope they will model the radio mast as this wasn't on either of the kato EF63 models. I also really want the ED62 set for my Iida Line fleet.

Looks like selling a kidney might have to be an option.

The new crossing are nice, they can use a bit of touching up to make them look better but they're still better than the old crossing piece and (unless I'm reading it wrong) you can clip the old wooden track piece in instead of the new concrete one. Would be nice if it came with the overhead bar though for the clearance check under the wires but that will be easy enough to add.
