My switches arrived,

post-3115-0-17260700-1498387056_thumb.jpg

So time for an economics lesson :D

so the 6 switches with postage from Hobbysearch cost £78.73

Then add Parcelforce, privalige fee of £22.89 :(

Giving a grand total of £101.62

Cost to order from Traintrax £93.15  (doh)

Cost to order from Guage master £105.00

However I would like to point out, that at the time of ordering, I could have sworn the switches were £5 dearer each.

Still shows how much Gaugemaster overcharge =p, In fairness I suspect they do this to allow their wholesale customers like Traintrax ect to sell at a better price and keep them happy.

Not a problem AFAIK as long as it's not an animal product. Or potatoes.

Paul is a giant in the hobby! ;-p

They look like 0805 smd leds at 2x1x1.25mm. The smallest you can get are 0402s are half those dimensions! 0603s are in between.

Imperial numbering (usually what you see) is basically length x width in 1/100 of an inch so 0402 is 4/100" x 2/100" or roughly 1mm x 0.5mm. Height is variable with component and manufacturing, but usually roughly the width.

Cheers,

Jeff

Fenway Park

Revolution number plates and two types of smoke deflectors for the Kato N gauge C56. Will add some variety but need to cut back the cab roof very carefully!!!!!!!!!

Purchased a spare body when they were first released.

Look like 0805s as they are a tad fat in width 0402 and 0603 are 1:2 l x w. Unless you need really tiny leds, 0805 are a bit more robust with larger area to connect wire to so stronger joint and less likely to have gotten overheated in soldering.

Yea or just model cement or even silicone seal. Just glue at the base of the wire. If you are running these at low amperage you can experiment with a diffuser cover or gallery glass (liquid plastic you get at the craft store that mimics stained glass, get the clear or slightly opaque one) and put a blob over the led. I experimented with this for streetlights and it helped provide a better glow effect than the pinpoint of light the naked smd leds give off.

Look forward to seeing the work!

Small order from AmiAmi arrived today, with the exception of the JOT (N and HO) UR19 containers the rest of the items are from the sale section.

Thanks for that info Jeff. any links or preferences for ordering? I have been trying to find Bi colour 2mm LEDs for some searchlight signals I am building. I have single colour ones which have about 4-5mm dowel shaped extension which has been handy to fit into recesses, etc

Lots of options on smd leds. They are tiny and soldering leads to them is something that takes a bit of solldering skill and practice, but something that can be done just practice!

You can get them pretty cheap as just components from 1-25 cents each depending on where you get them. Buying form name supplier will probably get you better quality ones with fewer soldering failures. Loads of cheap ones on ebay that I've found work fine as well.

There are a lot of ebay sellers selling colored and white 0402, 0603, 0805 smd lets with soldered leads attached. These are fine insulated wires or magnet wires for the really tight spaces. I've bought from several suppliers on ebay and found them great.

One is led baron and they seem to be the nicest quality. Their stock sort of fluctuates. http://stores.ebay.com/ledbaron?_rdc=1

Lots of sellers, usually like 25-100 cents each with the leads attached

Nariichi San also has some new smd leds with leads in his m-lite line.

If you are not doing scads then getting them with leads attached will save you a bunch of work. But if you want to put the leads on in a particular orientation then you can try soldering your own.

Cheers
