I replaced the drawbar with Tomix JC25 couplers. Looks much better and becuae there might be a possibility that the train will run in 2-car operations only (or combined with regular 6050s) in the future makes this also look more realistic.

A small collection of secondhand goods purchased at a local model train show over the weekend. Apart from the tankers at $10ea and transformer wagon at $15, all the other freight cars were $5ea. I also got a couple of coaches without boxes for $5ea, but forgot to photograph them. The etch sheets and pantographs were free.post-1342-0-76163800-1491823075_thumb.jpgpost-1342-0-12044400-1491823086_thumb.jpgpost-1342-0-12584500-1491823096_thumb.jpgpost-1342-0-42920300-1491823107_thumb.jpg

Wow, those prices are pretty good. I wish I could find this kind of stuff at local model trains shows. :sad1:

Funny you should mention that, because on the Intermodellbau last weekend, NOCH had several KATO trains (also Shinkansens) and carriages for sale for japanese (so, for europeans: bargain) prices. And N-Spoorwinkel was there too, also taking several of their secondhand KATO products (Shinkansens, 885 in Yellow, carriages etc., with more european secondhand pricing).

All I ever find second hand is $80 Sanriku Railway DMUs and DD-51s/DE-10s that people tried to 'Americanize' still selling for above their retail despite having their front ends mangled to try to fit Kadee couplers (they still hit the tracks on any incline....).

I have brought frequently off this chap. Strangely , Japanese Railway modelling is a small niche in the New Zealand market (both railways are narrow gauge?) He had test run only new diesels and steamers ,admittedly from late 80-90's production, which never sold! Diesels and electrics were around $45-70 and steamers with tenders for $90. His 20 or so coaches never sold at $10ea.

My friend visited another trader in hall on last day of show and acquired a Bachmann Light mountain with light running for $100. It had been priced at $199. I missed out on a model power Korean made 4-6-2 new in case  for $70.

I'm not trying to buy too much this year (as I'm running out of space to place my trains) but I have pre-ordered another KATO E4 Shinkansen (old colour) set and a motor underframe to replace the burnt out motor from an older unit (motor got burnt out by an older member of the club who had the shinkansen running full bore till it was struggling to even move and had a motor burn out smell (not pretty) and we finally for the part to replace it)

When I get this unit it can run double with my first KATO E4 shinkansen set to give it a representation 16 car double decker Shinkansen. Yes I know I could so the same with a Tomix set but I already have a KATO set :)

A 6-car 6050 Series fleet expansion came...

IMG_20170411_124229.jpg

Now I only need one or two double-pantograph 6050s and order a load of extra coreless motors... Only then I consider the fleet complete (for now). And yes, all cars have different numbers! :D

Today my Tomix wooden station arrived and I have to decide what color to paint it as its bright red roof and peach colored walls just don't work for me at all. It's going to be the terminal station of a nearly bankrupt little interurban in the late 1960s and I imagine that either light gray or medium / dark brown would be appropriate for the walls, with dark gray for the roof. Any opinions or ideas about what would be most typical for a structure like this? Thanks.

Uh oh Toni,  looks like you've developed 6050-itis!  Might want to have it checked out. I myself have 115-itis. :)

The good thing with 115s is that there are a ton of liveries and type variations to collect. The 6050s... Only different numbers, pantograph formations and bogie differences... Only two more sets and I'm done! I swear!

This set is another interesting set that combines a railway collection series with a bus collection series... Not a huge fan of older train models, but that bus is mighty interesting, even has its windows painted like the train!

Wow. That's quite a hoard!! Any chance you make a post about the platform sound effects kit after you get it working. I see it gives speaker dimensions but I can't quite read them. I wonder if it would fit in the Kato platforms.

I really like the aesthetics of the Swallow Akagi and it's JR East so it matches my taste in lines but the paint scheme is just too dull for me. It still is a nice looking model but I wish they'd done more than just the orange stripe on the design.

I second that ; I'd be very interested in reading a review of the Tomix Platform sound system. *prettyplease*

Sure do ~ I would like to do a review on the sound system too, once I get the hang of it.... The instructions are ALL in Japanese, and I am not exactly that proficient in Japanese.... It seems to have over 400 different types of sounds according to Tomix, but I don't get how to go about pressing the 8 buttons to achieve the different sounds as and when you like.... it should be s sequencing type; i.e. sound 1, followed by sound 2, 3, 4 etc... That way, if you want a certain sound you will need to cycle around the sounds till the one you want...

Only one main problem... Just a quick question before I get started, can anyone confirm if the AC plug can be plugged directly to my voltage here, which is 240v? Reason is, it is written on the plug 110-240v input, but it was written in another smaller font that says 110v 50~60hz only.... I fear plugging in directly will damage the system from high voltage...

I thought so too, but I love the looks and bubble head on the 651 series, and at least the paint scheme is much nicer than its Super Hitachi predecessor.. perhaps you can also consider getting the Izu Craile then, that paint scheme is just superb!

I suddenly had one crazy idea to couple the swallow akagi and the Izu craile together to form a 7+4 Super Hitachi formation to run together... haha ~

Can you post a picture of the plug?
