Yeah but it has pretty good craftsmanship and interior details. We have a fishbowl office just finishing up here in downtown bethesda.

Both if you are also trying to play with other viewers of the layout. Playing with your guest viewer's mind eye requires you to do something that will draw them into thinking there is detail stretching through out the layout. Having a few buildings in the right spots that draws the eye into some interior detail leaves the mind's eye thinking its there in all the structures and thus incites it to fill in all the interior details with its own memories from real life to the rest of the structures and they walk away with a super vivid picture in their head that is way more detailed than what you actually built! The key is to find those right bits to do this and other kind of detail and animation to play with the mind's eye.

Of course if you are just creating your layout for yourself and the rails stuff is all you care about then yes it's very secondary. It is amazing though how much you can fool your own mind's eye! Give it a try!

I like it.  But what is more important?  What is inside a building or outside in relation to rail modelling?

Depends on what type of modeling you want.

If your layout is designed to be viewed from more of a distance and more of an overview then maybe interiors are not important.. For buildings or trains..

However, if you want the eye-level photo realistic modeling than interiors are very important.. both for buildings and trains.. When taking those up close photos the interiors help make or break the illusion of reality.. even more important on smaller layouts..

Yep that's what it is.

For the work in something this custom that's pretty cheap. He does nice work from the pictures I've seen of his stuff.
