Seen in the pic is a standard Shorty chassis and one where its components have been fitted to a 3D printed brass chassis designed by the Z-Maker. Shapeways have curently suspended the production of brass items due to the Covid 19 pandemic but when i bought it the price was £29 plus the price of the Shorty. The improvement in running quality is immense due to the additional weight. Excuse the temporary wiring which is a bit untidy. It shows the versatility of the Shorty and opens up all sort of possibilities.

Seen with two prototype Fairbanks Morse H10-44 Road switcher bodyshells printed in FUD that are going to be scrapped (half the handrails have fallen off) and a brand new one just about to go into the Ultrasonic cleaner.

The start of a proper blue train. Grabbed 3 OHANE 25 0s which is the limit on Ami Ami for some reason. I’ll need 4 more to make up a Nihonkai or Tsurugi formation.

I also had the Kiha 80 motor unit on preorder so I can run both the 81 and 82 series in their respective formations independently. The 81 I have in a 7 car Tsubasa formation and the 82, I want to make up in a Nichirin 9 car formation with 3 cab units.( 7+2) I need 2 more Kiha 80 dummy coaches and I have a Kiha 82 900 on the Kiro end. This may not strictly be accurate but 82 902 was transferred to Kagoshima in 1970 and the Nichirin travelled between Nishi Kagoshima and Hakata. So it’s possible.

The final additions are 2 lots of blue train crew. 6-520. I did trying adding the seated drivers 6-511 to the Kiha 82 cabs but they are smaller (possibly 1:87 as I think they’re made by Noch) They look ok in cramped loco cabs but look like children at the railway museum in the Kiha cabs.

It seems the HO figures are in short supply. I haven’t seen the yard crews for a long time.

Thanks for the info. I might try and do a second order with Ami, and order another 3 as they’re ¥4840. I’m sure no one is checking previous orders. Failing that, Tam Tam have them for ¥4979.

TamTam always throws an error that I don‘t have the permission to enter their page. No idea why, I even tried it with a japanese proxy but that didn‘t work either.

RG-Rokko also has some 25% discount mentioned behind the listing, but idk if that‘s already applied or will be applied. I also don‘t know if they charge taxes if the stuff gets exported.

The Tam Tam website always used to be accessible from overseas as I used to order bits before I visited my in-laws.
Since about 2015 or so, that’s not been the case but unclear why. I tend to look at their shop in Haruda, south of Fukuoka as it’s never busy and they have reasonable stock holding. It’s in a pretty run down looking mall so I would imagine rent is pretty cheap for the unit. They have a similar range to the one in Akihabara but their HO is Pretty much limited to Kato, Tomix only. Fine for me on the cheaper end of Japanese HO. Good range of N gauge and Assyparts too.

Yikes! Box showed up today that I forgot I got off ebay! 72 plarail capsule train cars! Got the. For a little over the original 100¥ each shipped! Really big addition to the collection and a number that will fill in partial sets I already have and I can cheat some swapping shells and chassis to finish off sets properly.

box was three layers deep! Now it will be finding a few end and middle cars to finish off some partial sets I’ll end up with...

yell if anyone wants to do some trades! But shipping these days may make that prohibitive.

cheers

Actually these are usually ¥200 each so you might have got a pretty good deal.

Yikes! Last trip to japan was over 10 years ago when still 100 yen machines!

it was a haul, I think the cheapest per unit I’ve ever gotten. Do need to test the mechs, but I have some extras I can always switch out if poor.

now I have to get out all the capsule plarail stored in various places to combine and see the current fleet and what’s needed to fill in or get rid of.

still scratching my head on storage as I have a lot of these now I realize. Part of pulling them all out will also be to see how much storage will now be needed. I can be patient, harbor freight puts those boxes on sale for $3 now and then and each will hold 8 sets of 3.

Finally my HO Kiha40s made it after sitting in Tokyo for over 3 weeks. They are very nice, to bad they don't have an interior though, something to work on down the road I guess. 😉

Share some more photos!  Are those the tramway ones?  I've been heavily tempted by them in the past.

Hobbysearch has put up better pictures then I could take. 🙂

Yes they are the Tramway Kiha40s, except these were painted by Popopro. HS only has the motorized JR East left in stock.

My August preorders from Ami Ami arrived. Kato 4 car set 24系 JNR specification coaches.  2 lots of the Tomix Taki 1900 cement tankers which come with decals to construct either Sumitomo Cement or Myojo Cement Tankers. As they’re going to be thrown behind my EF71/ED78 I’ll make them Myojo based in Niigata. The final late announcement  addition was for a Yo 5000 to stick on the end of my mixed freight/cement train. I had a spare lighting unit to put in the Yo although it looks a bit stark with white plastic interior shining out of the windows so need to paint it up.

It’s a shame they didn’t see fit to sell these blue train coaches separately as I only initially wanted the KaNi 24 100 and the OHANEFU 25 100. Now I have some other OHANE And OHANEFU 25 0s I’ve decided to create a 12 car Tsurugi formation with all 0 series coaches and might try and make up a 14 car Fuji/Hayabusa using 100/200 series coaches.

My knowledge of these coaches is limited but I think Kato are missing a trick not putting JR logo dry transfers in their coach packs. The 24 or 12 series don’t come with any despite being used after JNR was split up.  It certainly limits Kato options to Hokutosei if you want a more modern image blue train.

Tomix do this with their 50系 coaches so you can model JNR or JR versions. Did JR make any changes to these series coaches or perhaps licensing cost would add something to the very reasonable price point?

Finally ordered and received the last few coaches needed for a 12 car Tsurugi or Nihonkai 25  0 series formation for my Rose pink EF81.A183D236-D2B2-4F86-807B-A76ADB21C9BB.thumb.jpeg.e702fb6227b737d227f1d0d628311206.jpeg

Received
1x KANI 24 0

1x OHANEFU 25 0

4x OHANE 25 0

The OHANEFU and 3 of the OHANE came from Ami Ami but I ended up having to get a forth from elsewhere due to Ami’s 3 household limit. This is despite it being my second order of 3 so seems more of an order limit than a household limit. A tad annoying when you need 7 for a consist.

I put some short shank Kadee couplers on the OHANEFU ends as the plastic ones Kato use seem very long. This does shorten the gap between the 2 sections of the train but I will order the intermediate coach couplers that Kato use on their OHANEs to hopefully reduce this gap further. 13D86786-4A03-4A6C-8B41-C5A5CC25AD2B.jpeg.0d8b16628eff83bf96695bd84524247b.jpeg51880399-36FB-48B9-A03D-BCBFD6CA3BD6.jpeg.d18af58ef98d682ba434db41e5f31d42.jpeg

As in my previous post, I have some additional 25 100 coaches so I intend to get hold of the remaining 10 coaches to make up a Fuji/Hayabusa formation. This will also allow me to mix and match with the 0 series coaches for a wide number of blue train formations.

That will probably be enough HO for me for a little while as over the last few years I have managed to get most of the trains I really wanted and still have a lot to do in terms of detailing and populating them.

Welp, I was weak.  Looks like I'll be getting a C59 postwar, and a Kyushu type 9600 in the next few weeks.....

If only I had bigger hobby savings so I could pick up some more HO stuff, it never rains but when it does, it pours!

Wish I had gotten the seki sets when hobby search had them on sale!  Hopefully I'll find some for a good price eventually.  The tenshoto Tsubame and kato 20 series coaches are also very tempting...  Time to list some older trains to help pay for my new addiction!

I took the plunge and bagged the HOKUTOSEI 4 car set and the 24 series 4 car set that Rails of Sheffield had on ebay this morning.

They’re nice models and run well. A good find. They also have the 20 series 4 car set although from quite an old run.
