Welshbloke
That EF81-300 is rather lovely. Am I right in thinking the more expensive "High Grade" version simply has all the detailing parts factory fitted, rather than a pile of sprues to add? Link to comment

Am I right in thinking the more expensive "High Grade" version simply has all the detailing parts factory fitted, rather than a pile of sprues to add? As far as I know, the Prestige version have factory fitted parts, but I believe the handrails are painted brass wire rather than just the plastic ones pre-attached. I am also under the impression that the pantographs on the prestige models are metal rather than the very flexible plastic that the base ones are made from. I have a couple of Tomix locos with pantographs slightly bent from the box that need replacing. Points to Kato for using metal pantographs on all their HO locos. Imon produce metal pantagraphs and Fuji model handrails if you want to upgrade the non-Prestige versions. Metal parts would equate to about ¥13000 which takes you up to a similar price. What I don't know is whether these are always standard or whether it differs model to model. On the DF200 as example, hand rails, coupler release levers, air hoses, signal flares and wipers are metal on the Prestige version. Obviously no pantagraph, but previous Prestige EF81s had metal ones. Everything else is plastic such as the shunters step, whistles, radio antenna. Wipers are metal parts on the basic version anyway. You'd obviously still need to add the maker plates, loco numbers and shed allocation. Edited March 25, 2024 by Kamome Link to comment
Rod.H
I don't know if this was sighted https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10981039 it's a Seicomart essential for any Hokkaido street scene. Yes, they have Lawsons and 7-11 in Hokkaido, but Seicomart is in pretty much every town. Oh and yes Seicomart are also in Ibarakai & Saitama prefectures so relevant for that JR East sector. Edit: It looks like I should get one as there's a Seicomart in Kashima near the KRT, but Kashima main station has a Ministop konbini and I already have a 7-11 in my building collection. Wonder if Tomix will do a new Lawsons. Edited June 7, 2024 by Rod.H 1 Link to comment

I notice these are already listed on Hobby Search for reservation. I haven't looked at a pre-order item before. Will other retailers (e.g. Plaza) eventually list these, or is HS the only one that does pre-orders like this? Link to comment
Madsing
They are also listed at amiami https://www.amiami.com/eng/detail?gcode=RAIL-35521 1 Link to comment

bc6
Looks like Tomix is doing another release of the DD200. Hopefully this is an opportunity to make steps for sale. Link to comment
Beaver
I thought Tomix, unlike Kato, do not actually put spare parts on retail sale? That you have to order from their domestic-only spares service? Link to comment
bc6
Although Tomix does offer replacement parts for sale, I have not yet seen the steps for the DD200 up for sale. Link to comment

That you have to order from their domestic-only spares service? Actually they do but only some parts. You can search on Hobby Search and see some are listed. I have not sat down and figure out the rhyme or reason what is available for retail sale. When I was in Japan late last year, all train stores I went to stock Tomix spares. Mostly spring, couplers, pantographs and other small parts. I did not see any "larger" parts like motors, chassis, etc. Link to comment
Beaver
So some basic essentials but far fewer than the competition. I remember buying Tomix models from the junk section in shops and then getting frustrated at how hard it was to find the spare parts to fix them, mostly missing details like handrails and, yes, steps...... disturbman
Regarding spare parts, Kato is the anomaly rather than the rule. None of the others sale the full array of parts, if any. MA only sales motor chassis. Afaik, GM doesn't sale spare parts, only upgrade parts. But this is muddied by the fact they have parts for their kits. I don't think Popondetta has any parts available on the market. The junk section is more made to serve as part-donors to repair broken models, or as base for other modeling projects, rather than a base to be upgraded and fixed 😉 Edited January 13 by disturbman 1 Link to comment
bc6
Most of the major N scale manufacturers do have spare parts however there is no rhyme or reason to their choice of what to offer. Hobby Search has an exhaustive list of parts for sale, Tomix even has a pre-order for TN couplers for the upcoming release of the 789-0 set which is pretty interesting considering the set is not available for retail purchase yet. Needless to say I've reached out to several distributors of Tomix to inquire about procuring said replacement steps for the DD200 locomotive. Kamome
Yes the Cement Terminal (CT) green is quite a nice colour. I’m hoping that Tomix will decide to run the HO versions again. I’m quite interested in the limestone and cement haulage industry. Although these days, a lot of it is no longer moved by rail. 1 Link to comment
