    My 3’x7’ Japan Inspired Layout

After track laying, I went into ballast and ground detail. I covered all the track in painters tape to protect it from the glue and ballast. Using woodland scenic products, I tried to match the ballast color as best I could. A mix of two greens and brown ground cover was used to make the grass and natural ground cover.

    My 3’x7’ Japan Inspired Layout

With the wiring down and to be later organized. I did a test run of all the tracks and points. Began to think about the small town layout as well.

    My 3’x7’ Japan Inspired Layout

So because of apparent file size constraints. I’ll have to reply to my starting post a few times. The top layer of my layout is purple insulation foam from Home Depot, painted a basic grey (left over from house painting). I laid out my track in the shape I wanted and traced it out in pencil. I cut some holes under the switch points and power supply track to run wires below. once the wires were in place. I began to pin down the track. Little by little, the layout took shape
  5. In December of 2022 I made first trip to Japan and fell in love with its rail network and history. I even went to the KATO stores in Tokyo and Kyoto and bought my first N scale and first Japanese model trains. Even made a stop at the Kyoto Railway museum. Fast forward to May of 2023 I had purchased more trains, track, and accessories to begin building a new layout. It took about two months to build and detail, but for my first layout since I was a kid, I’m happy with it. below, you see how it was built from ply board and foam. My initial track planning and laying, and later detailing.

    Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways

Oh man the prisoner, a childhood favorite! How was the visit to Portmeirion? Is it full of tourists or still quaint? Does the bubble chase all the tourists out of town at 5pm? jeff
  19. Ditto I would always have a small, lightweight nylon duffle bag in my main bag when traveling on vacation to bring home bought stuff in. Small enough to use as a carryon. The little duffle brought back all sorts of weird goodies from all over the world. Lots of strange looks at security as they would always end up pulling out all the odd items I had collected on the trip. But these days it’s harder to have anything but a single small carryon on some international flights. I couldn’t figure out why as planes didn’t get smaller, but then we were on a flight routed through Heathrow with an extreme carryon restriction and it turned out it was so folks could bring massive carryons of duty free items that were exempt from the carryon restrictions. Some came on with a couple of suitcases worth of stuff! Jeff
  20. It is nice to see how many folks have been able to meet up all over the world after meeting on JNS! I’ve gotten to meet about a dozen folks from around in person after meeting on then on JNS. Love to do a japan meetup, but that kind of travel is still out of me still unfortunately. jeff
  21. We often take a collapsible fabric bag when we travel and then - if/when we fill it with items - bring it on board as an extra carry-on. Don't think this would work on a basic economy ticket but depending on what cabin your are in, or your status with the airline or what credit care you use, it may be an option. We travel with rolling backpacks which are pretty small and I just loop the straps of the fabric bag over the handles of the rolling bag and it is pretty easy to manage. You can see a picture in my thread about my winter trip to Japan. One caveat - since it is a soft sided bag, delicate items need protection. We managed okay on our last trip as I did not have too much but some cheap plastic boxes from Daiso could be useful to protect items like paper building kits and such. Ciao, Tony
  22. Yes, a second suitcase would work but we try to not check luggage if at all possible due to the fiasco after the flight waiting and looking for it. We went to Japan for 15 days last September with only carry on even though we flew Business and could have checked luggage for free. That's another thing. On lower class fares they charge a handsome fee for checked luggage! We just got back from Portugal (sorry, no train shops ☹️) and TAP Portugal wanted $90 for each piece of checked luggage!!! 😲
  23. On my last trip in February - which I would not think is a heavy tourist season, we found long lines at Tokyo Station for both the machines and the manned offices though at Aomori and Hakodate the lines were minimal. Personally, I like having a manned office as I lack confidence when using the ticket machines. Tony
  24. Did something I rarely do and purchased an out of production model on eBay. We had ridden this train from Aomori to Hirosaki in February and, for some inexplicable reason, I really liked it. Model wise it is also nice as it is relatively short at only four cars. On our trip north, I also saw the only remaining DD-16 so I found a model of that on line and purchased it as well. Of course Suruga-Ya then offered a model of it for about a 1/3 of the price so now I have more DD-16s than does JR East (which operates that sole remaining unit.) It's not the travel to Japan that is so expensive, it is the model train buying that accompanies the trip that turns out to be so costly. Ciao, Tony
  25. Hi, I'm sharing with you my journey to UK, rsp. Manchester, Portmeirion and Porthmadog. The aim of this travel was to discover the fabulous Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways as well as Portmeirion where the TV serie "The Prisoner" (I'm totally fan of) was done in 1968. First of all, I've released today my train trip from Manchester Airport to Minffordd where the courtesy shuttle brings you to the "Village" I recommend to click on "You tube" as videos are in HQ & 4K
  26. https://news.tv-asahi.co.jp/news_society/articles/000348555.html The rail operator thought online and ticket machine purchasing would decrease the need for manned offices but congestion at remaining locations suggests otherwise. JR East may even open temporary offices where congestion is a problem. A combination of season ticket renewals, and the growing number of inbound tourists has created unforseen demand, and led to this rethink.
