For text I will use mobile device camera and translate apps to read some of the text to get specific details when curiosity piqued by pictures. Many of the modeling books have interesting stepwise phtots that speak a 1000 words without google translate. On 2/19/2024 at 8:51 AM, Tony Galiani said: @Kingmeow - ditto to what Jeff said. Also, I have a lot of trouble coming up with scenic ideas when building layouts so the pictures are a big help for me. For example, when I was leaving YFS, the owner threw in one of his shrine sets to my purchase. In looking in the first book above, on page 107, there is a shrine scene with the same elements in that set. Perfect - I plan to use that as a template for a scene with that kit. I've got a fair few books and magazines like that, even though I can read the text, the main value is the pictures. And to be slightly cynical, for layouts at least the text is often very much a variant on the same story ("My interest in trains began around the time Commodore Perry came over with the Black Ships, but I was busy with work for decades and only now I've retired have I had time to build my dream railway" 😉 ). Kamome
Big fan of these old electrics from the Minobu and Iida lines. They do really look thrown together but iconic and benefit from a panel line wash. As Kato have got me by the knackers and decided to release yet another diorama contest Kyushu based Kiha 58, I of course couldn’t pass up adding it to the others. The Toro Q was run as a 5 “coach” formation with 3 converted tora 70000s in the middle which are currently absent. Hope to hear of a kit or release of the 3 wagons at a later date. The original JR Kyushu liveried one from 3 years ago had some exclusivity to shops submitting diorama entrants although this latest release seems to be available across most retailers, so he’s hoping for the 3 wagons. Head marks are only included stickers so need to mount to some plasti-card as well as add the priority seat stickers to some of the windows. I can currently run it as the 6 coach special from 2008 on the Hisatsu line. Here are the 3 together. A short clip of the real formation. 7 Link to comment

On the plus side I noticed they didn't come with those brown plastic "display" rails, which I have absolutely no use for and suspect the vast majority never gets used. 11 hours ago, Kamome said: Big fan of these old electrics from the Minobu and Iida lines. It fits somewhat into my Chuo Line-centric strategy, hence my preference... Additional detailing (beyond basic parts upgrade) will have to wait until I have more quality time. Link to comment
SL58654号
Today I made another visit to Nikkyosha hobby center and I happily picked up the Aso 1962 (my first JNR diesel cars) and Mani 36 (5229), another great JNR passenger car that goes well with steam models. Mr. Nikkyosha also gave me a good discount since I purchased both together. Money well spent! The Aso 1962 diesel cars will doubtless go well on my Hisatsu Line-themed layout, as they did occasionally run on the line to Hitoyoshi. And for a billion-quadrillion dollars, can anybody tell what book is opened to the right of them? Next on my list to collect: C62 2 (2017-8) C56 160 (2020-2) C57 (2024) Welsh Pony 009 JR West Old Model Passenger Car set (10-1893) Edited March 3 by SL58654号 5 Link to comment

American Locomotives of the Midland Railway by David Hunt. I bought it specifically because it focuses on these anomalous American engines on this English railway. And btw, I put the photo used for the 2501 Class Wiki article! Edited February 26 by SL58654号 Link to comment

Suica
After a lot of back and forth because it doesn't really fit my collection policy I ended up ordering the Kato 300 Series Shinkansen after all. It's such a cool model and only my second full 16-car Shinkansen. Interesting that Kato makes do with only one motor car where everyone else would use two. 9 Link to comment
Kamome
Nice @Suica I was really on the fence about the 300 too. Thought they’d sell through quickly but there seems to be stock around over a year later. Definitely not my favourite design of all time but glad I got one as I rode many in the mid 2000s and I know I would’ve regretted not including one in my collection. I managed to grab a 2nd motor unit but these optional parts tend to disappear. 28-227 1 Link to comment

SL58654号
Today, during a slow Saturday afternoon I had the pleasant surprise of the delivery man handing me this EF57 (3069) that I had ordered this week. A good and powerful runner, two thumbs up! It's a classic EL that I'm glad to own in my roster. Maybe I'll get the DD16 next? 10 Link to comment
SL-san
Arrived today (March 3) from RG-R (shipped Feb 29) and beautifully packed as usual, a few buildings and bits and pieces to create a diorama...the Shinto Shrine set looks pretty amazing! Now to get to work on them!! Graeme 7 Link to comment

If I'm not mistaken, the second car in the package with the green stripe doesn't have a cab even though the car end is shaped like it does. You will notice that the cab-looking end doesn't have a door for the driver. The MicroAce A8489 which models a similar formation also does not have cabs on the intermediate cars, but it models the train as it ran before its retirement in 2015. Horribly late on this but yeah, I noticed that when I got both. I'll have to track down a second set at some point. Link to comment
