don't worry, no particular problems with this MA model, just take care of red pantograph (too fragile) because you can forget spare parts - Tomix/Kato can be adapted with small modification, but "only original parts" is better

Thanks for the warning. I'm not even going to touch the pantograph. Though at some stage I may very carefully paint them.

Guess what appeared on my doorstep, gotta love holiday Saturday parcel delivery

Broke out the Starter pack A track for the test, and she no scoooch! This new to me Shinkansen was supposed tested as working by the seller - a local retailer whose only exposure to Japanese trains is USA Kato rollingstock.

Go through the diagnostics flow chart till I hit mechanicals, one power bogie was loose from the body and slightly over lubricated, put it back in after wiping off the excess, slight improvement as sporadic movement is now happening. Right, recheck. Take the ex-loose power bogie out again, remove bodyshell in case it's something else in the drive train, note the other power bogie has a limited pivot range and remove that....1990493458_train004.thumb.JPG.6618da0a95015a719ad6667cde15d6df.JPG

Okay...come back to that after testing the motor with dc power applied directly to the frame bus, wipe off more excess lube, re-coil that spring back into a more cylinder shape. Refit the power bogies, test, good, reverse the disassembly processes, test again, still good, couple up the rest of the bookcase to make a 6-car and run. Looks a bit strange on plain C280 curves but that's the minimum radii it's designed for. May yet break out the viaduct tracks for grade testing.

Just one more thing, the cab cars, they are mean to have functioning tail and headlights yes? They're not working on mine, guess that mean new light boards.

There’s a small Hobbyland Pochi in Hakata and it’s always pretty expensive for most complete sets or new condition used stock. It’s good for “junk” items and individual cars without boxes.

Yes, I know. Pochi is a good last ressource. You can get some good prices but they usually are on the higher end of the spectrum and rare sets are overpriced. Other than YJA, Popondetta and Mandarake are better sources for second hand sets.

One if comes with interior lights. I don't know if that was factory or added by the previous owner. But they're expertly installed with no flickering.

Railsquidded!

I bet it was user installed. MA doesn't pre-install interior lights in its sets. The previous owner probably installed Popondetta's anti-flicker lights. Is the board black?

I would say yes. It's a pretty old set, maybe something else is loose somewhere.

I seem to remember the easti being fitted with leds. I think a few point up at catenary. Maybe I’m confusing it with another of the later release test train models. I’ll dig mine out.

I'd bet that at least the green and yellow inspection lights were installed.

I've not taken the cab shells off yet and that might be the case as while it was running around the loop the head and tail light intermittently turned on and off but they stayed mostly off. Also adding interior lights is going to be a pain, as only the motor and cabs have the bogies with contacts and springs

The lot from the recent HS sale. My N700S is now complete and off to the diplay shelf it goes. Also managed to grab some lovely GM Kiha-54s to finally have a small fleet of motorised Kiha-54s for Hokkiado ~

LOVE these mini urethane! they fit perfectly into Kato mini (4/5 car smaller book cases), and can hold up to 7 cars!

Given its apparent age, it's very likely all contact surfaces could do with a good clean; this often improves things. Also, it has the old-style pickups, which "rest" on the axles; it's possible they've picked up gunk there.

Those used to come together with the appropriate lighting part (0751, released in 1984 and very much not LED) but it's not listed in the 2020 Tomix guide, and I get the impression it's been out of production for a few years (there is one listed on Amazon at an eyewatering 13200 yen at which point you'd be better off putting the money towards a modern version). The contacts might be available individually as part JS21 and the springs as JS06 (you might want to replace the damaged one anyway).

There might be third parties light boards, like by MTP, Torm and others. It could be worth a search. I have seen a lot of them for older locomotives.

Back to inspection trains, is there any good place to find an MA East-i D/E? They were sold out on Hobbysearch but that’s the only online shop I’ve checked. I guess an online auction like yahoo would be my best bet, but a quick search doesn’t find anything.

Another one popped up on YJA, https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/v1026912126

A little off my usual territory but I do have a slight affection for Keikyu, partly for the "slam the controller to the max" driving style, partly as it once formed part of my regular travelling experience, and the nice thing about that was you never knew what kind of train would come along.

These were reaching the end of their life around when I was commuting:

Despite being cheap 2nd hand Microace, all it needed was a wheel clean. I shall use "Aoto" for the destination boards in memory of a long-ago relationship.
