What did you order or the post deliver? (Japanese N Gauge)

A couple of Tomytec items, Tobu Railway ED5060 (£17 from ebay complete with powered chassis!) and an office building. The latter will be going onto my layout project after I've added some lighting and a few false floors in the right hand part.

The ED5060 needs scale pantographs, I'll order a bundle in a fortnight as I have another three Tomytecs which also need some (107 and 119 Series, and a Chichibu Railway 1000 Series in yellow with the brown stripe). At the same time I'll order a powered chassis for the yellow 105 Series I have sitting here. Going to do this on the basis of ordering one or two motorised chassis every month until I have the entire fleet powered. Which will be ten EMUs, one loco, and a dummy KuMoYuNi by then...

I recently received a Micro Ace A9656/7 NH49 0系 16-car formation as well as a A9658 6-car R14 0系.  Although they were listed as used on Yahoo Auctions, they appear brand new.  Haven't had a chance to run them yet, but I love them so far (just not at MSRP, LOL).

Speedsphere did an in-depth review:  http://www.speedsphere.jp/RailRoad/Shinkansen/Tec0SeriesModelReview03b.aspx

And of course this forum's #1 shinkansen expert wrote an excellent post about the prototype:  http://www.jnsforum.com/community/topic/10498-0-series-shinkansen-0-1000-r14-hikari-organized-shuttle-6-car-set/

Ordered a bunch of little magnets from http://www.e-sangyo.jp/ to act as couplers between my narrow gauge cars.  Not very cheap, but much smaller than the ones I can get at the 100 yen shop. Probably also a little less strong, as the ones from the 100 yen shop are very aggressive. Well, agressive and big, so the magnetic surface goes beyond the coupler area, meaning the cars lock together in every position, meaning derailments occur in corners very very easily.

Lots of tiny rare earth magnets on ebay.

I'd rather buy from a Japanese company, since I can have direct contact with the maker, rather than go via via. They have an incredible amount of different sizes on offer as well, so I might even start to develop small couplers for certain magnets installed later as well.

My sales orders from AmiAmi and Hobby Search arrived recently. Both dropped off by the Rural delivery man at the same time , even though I ordered them a week apart! It sure was fun unpacking them together. The last three photos are some items I won on a local auction site recently .The trader was travelling up to Tauranga and dropped them off. Initially I paid  NZ$25 for half the items and as the other half never sold, he included them for free!

Some more supplies for building a future layout arrived today courtesy of AmiAmi, accompanying them was some bits and pieces of freight, the Koki 50000 will most likely end up on rotten row to keep my Wamu 380000 company.

Yeah, I already had a phone call from the Singaporean Embassy here asking me to desist from tempting you further, as your purchases are contributing to the steady sinking of the island :P

After much deliberation and consulting with some members, I went ahead and got the Tomix Type 923 Doctor Yellow and Kato Series 700 Nozomi and here they are with their brother the Tomix 700-7000 Hikari Railstar.

The deciding factor came down to couplers - I really like the older diaphragm couplers on the Kato 700 and is similar to Kato Series 100 which I think is more robust and easier to uncouple.  I'm not a big fan of the new Kato Shinkansen coupler which is employed on the Kato Doctor Yellow so this was a fairly easy decision to go with the Tomix with the power ring couplers.

Really nice stuff Sammy!

I actually need the second Snow Monkey Express set with the grey window line.

Thanks! You mean the older colour E1 set? I was looking at that set too, but it is almost similar to the former N'EX except for the lack of the JR logos and the N'EX plane logo, and the addition of the 2 monkey photos...

Actually, the mayor of Takahashi town has given written approval to this lot as there were new funding in from the sales of surplus/ under-utilised sets through foreign exports ~  :)

Very nice! But why no 500 series?   :(

I see... But only the Kato had the working overhead inspection lights... I made this choice solely from this point as I felt that the inspection lights were what defined the Doctor Yellow as an inspection train... But nonetheless I was quite torn between the power couplers too when I had to make this decision...

Yup! Apart from that fact that I like the grey window line on the E1, it's mainly because that's the set I rode. :)

Watch on assembling the fuel tankers, particularly the mirrors. Also the ladders will likely need to be straightened out a bit as mine were a little bent. Also make sure you get the exhaust right if you add the alternate part for fuel loading.

thanks for the heads up Nah00. I noticed a lot of parts are painted which is nice, but I intend repainting the units anyway for our airforce colour which is a flat dark blue. I want to make up the control tower I have first before building these.

Link to comment

You can *almost* assemble them without painting but I did need to do some touch-up with olive drab and black around where I cut the parts off of the gates.

I still need to get around to making the control tower too. I really don't feel like masking off all the details on the wall to paint them (not to mention the fact that I want to repaint the whole thing a darker shade of beige since mine is almost transparent). Also the sheet of photo-etched parts is kinda scary.

Link to comment

I've dealt with photo etched parts before and they are not so bad. A steel ruler is useful for bending against to get angles. The Aru nine kits are very easy to bend. A friend did a CNC etch of a TT scale loco for me some time ago and on top of the work required filing the brass, he used a thicker slab which made bending super difficult. Probably did this to make the body stronger. With the tower, can you line the inside or even paint it black (this is what I will be doing)

I was tempted with the tractor unit kit for towing my planes, but my budget is blown for a bit!

Link to comment

The tractor unit is nice, don't bother on the weapons trailer one though, it was kind of a disappointment and you have to glue down the missiles otherwise they go everywhere at the slightest bump. Good idea on painting the inside black, I'll do that and then just hit the outside with dull coat to tone down the plastic.

Uh oh, I'm delving into JR West Limited Express territory.  But they're so sleek and clean looking!  Needed something contemporary for a little change of pace.  :)
