Gerry's Japanese Layout

I found that I was out of model glue, and of course, it was a holiday so will go out later to find some.

I also need a variety of batteries so hope I can find them all in one place.

I have been trying to find the LR44 batteries for the bus system, here in Canada, but no such luck.  Stores which deal in a lot of batteries say they have never heard of them.

Does anyone in North America know of an alternate replacement battery for this system?

I have found Sunbeam 5 packs of LR44 at Dollarama for $2, in the local store they are kept up near the registers.

A very short time ago, I ordered the Sankei Ghibli 3 Wheel Truck kit from HS.

I received it yesterday and with thorough care, took it out of it's wrappings.  Also with thorough care I thought about how it would be to build this truck.  My decision, mostly because of my shaking hands and fading eyesight, is to NOT try building it.  I do believe it will be of a size to fit an N scale layout, but not mine.

So done a quick search of MTP, found the ones which are being worked on by tossedman as shown on his thread of the Totoro Module.  I think they are just what I need.  READY TO RUN.  No detail work necessary.  ORDERED.

I think that building the castle will be daunting enough for me.

Onward and upward,

gerryo,

sorry to hear that. yes those tiny sankei vehicle kits are very fiddly even for those into small stuff! the n scale scooters were a challenge of using the magnifier and tweezers! You have to enjoy the challenge or they are a terror.

yes best to focus on what you can do easily and keep on moving with the layout an hobby and not get caught by the things that will hang you up. wise.

My only word of caution is that not all LR44s work with the bus system but if you're getting them at $2 it's not much of a loss.

Also with your yard is 4 feet going to be enough for five tracks? If you're storing shorter trains it's no problem but only the first two tracks will hold anything of length. #4 turnouts might solve some of this but have their own issues.

Hi nah00.

I have not yet found any LR44s.  I haven't looked much lately as I have been involved with other things.

The yard should work well with #4s, as all my trains except the shinkansens have quite short cars.  I do have a further 5-6 inches that can be added to the yard which isn't built yet.  This might allow the use of #6s.

Hi Todd.  Yes I have one fairly close, just haven't got there yet.  Been working on the layout.

Hi nah00.  On re-measuring possible additional space for the yard I found that I could make it 5 feet long.  This could mean that I could use #6s, as the angle at the yard throat would be 33 degrees.

This would give me 5 tracks with the following lengths;   52", 48.5", 46", 42.5", 39.5".  All of these lengths would allow my Shinkansens to fit, if necessary.  I only have the standard lengths, not super extended.

I have spent quite some time working on my Matsumoto Castle and suddenly realised that it is not square.  Both small towers are built at different angles to the main tower.

I immediately thought it was my eyes, but that is the way this is designed.  I realise that during one of the original's rebuilds, it was found to be leaning, but no mention of this skewered effect.

Here is a pic of it from top down.

Gerryo,

The two buildings not at right angles to each other may be for sight lines on the castle approaches to shoot at invaders. lots of odd angles on the approach walls to concentrate invaders and disorient them as well.

Hope to get your board soldered up tonight.

Ok.  I guess I could believe the sight angles thing, but you would wonder when they were rebuilding it after a severe fire ......

OK the fire was caused by a battle where the sight lines were needed.  My mind is wandering again.

Thanx for the board,Jeff

The building techniques over 500 years ago were a little different to today's standards.  If it wasn't square, they just made it work.  In the recent reconstructions, they aren't gonna rebuild the footings and moat and make it all square.

I have just about finished building the Tomytec Temple A3, and the last thing to do is to install the roof.  Which brought me to the question of lighting.  This unit is completely painted black inside and there are no windows.  So the question is should there be a light inside or not?  That may be construed as a stupid question, but could the light glow out through the black paint?

This is mentioned in some NHK show that's been re-run dozens of times.  I think their example is Uwajima Castle.  The base (not just the foundation of the castle, but the larger elevated area that it rests upon) has an unequal pentagonal shape.  If you walk around it, you'd think it had four sides, and maps from the Edo area (obviously not aerial maps) show that cartographers perceived it as four-sided.  So this messed up any plan to surround the castle.

Yeah walking up the spiraling approaches the wall angles are all odd and event the pattern of the rock work and slopes of the paths Change and sides are never parallel. It's very disorienting when you walk them and you can imagine trying to charge in with arrows flying and things dropping on you!

Would you want it to?

If there are no windows, why would you even consider a light?
