IST
I use mine without the weights and it runs smoothly. jeff, I was worried about how it will look like, based on the many pictures and videos seen about the GreenMover. But I agree with you, the Santram is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better. Link to comment

kvp
The trick of the quality is the stiffness of the mech. Unlike the modemo power unit, the tomix version has two connection points between each section, making the power unit horizontally stiff. To compensate this, the bogies have a low level of movement freedom, minus rotational. This is the same trick that the prototype uses. However it's not really possible to make a tram with more than 2 bogies (3 sections) this way. For longer trams (like 5 sections), you need at least 1 horizontally flexible point, which is tricky. You can make a nonsymmetrical B-s-B+s-2 arrangement, but a B-s+2+s-B would sag like the modemo (B:power bogie, 2:trailer bogie, -:horizontally rigid join, +:horizontally flexible join, s:suspended section). The weights are optional, since the full weight of the motor is on the 2 bogies, but if the layout is hilly, then without them, the front wheels might lift up at the horizontal transition and it might also climb turnouts easier. macdon
Today, FModel's "Illumi" lights have arrived! They're for my Tomix 800 Tsubame. Great service from Motoko Ahn with free shipping to boot! Finally tested the Kato 10-453 series 0 - 2000 Hikari shinkansen. I was fortunate to be a participant of JICA last '87 and this is what we rode back then. It certainly brings back the good old memories! Full yard now ............... I gotta sneak-in the E7 somehow. Made a short video of the series 0: http://youtu.be/i5tRmOhGsxg Mardon 2 Link to comment
cteno4
naw you'll just do another addition somewhere! Full yard now ............... I gotta sneak-in the E7 somehow. Link to comment
macdon
naw you'll just do another addition somewhere! Thats right Jeff, the on site shinkansen yard was kinda limiting in a way. Maybe an off site or something like a separate module yard is best and much easier to expand down the road. Ver2 took the yard out of equation and one of my design considerations was to extend the shinkansen line but still in the same size table of the previous layout. The previous one had 7.5 meters worth of tracks but now ver2 is at 14 meters................ I also ran out of ideas for continuing with my freight layout, so hopefully I could add a small freight line here and disassemble my other layout to focus on the big one. Lots of spare tracks which leads me to design varying options with the help of Railmodeller program - its all great fun! Mardon 1 Link to comment
Sean
I love the layout, particularly that station platform! The TV Tower you use is pretty neat. Its actually based on Nagoya TV Tower, which I live only a couple of blocks away from (in fact, as I type this I am actually looking at the real thing). I had been looking for a model of it for my layout, is that a 3D puzzle too? Link to comment

macdon
Ver2 has been very slow indeed due to the busy months but have created a very simple bus and tram line in a figure "8" configuration........ Mardon 2 Link to comment

macdon
I was looking at some various japanese bridge design options in google when I saw this....... I knew something similar is sold in ebay but I just cant see myself forking over the cash as I feel they were still pricey. It might not be as good as those ebay bridges, but with a bit of wood, a drill bit and some yellow string ............. Mardon 7 Link to comment

cteno4
Mardon, That is nice! I think if you were to have two sections of kato viaduct (248 or 186) fused together (maybe a little styrene underneath the fused joint for support) on either side of the center pylons and then some wires for the stays up to your central pylons (string may sag with time) and you are done! Easy peasy! Cheers Jeff Edited September 11, 2014 by cteno4 Link to comment
macdon
Jeff - I was planning to do something similar with the viaduct tracks when they arrive. My cousin in hawaii has been collecting my stuff since april and Im hoping it will ship soon as it will take a month to get here on a slooooow boat. .........I was just a bit impatient and did the above to see how it looks. macdon
Progress on this have been very slow but here are some pics of the work I did weeks/months ago....... A section of the layout was cut to build up the dock edge. It was located near the center of the layout, so the only way for me to work on it up close is to take a section out of the foam and re-attach when finished. Structures in front of the shinkansen station. I mostly used Tomix structures as they provided sidewalks and street railings in most kits. Backside of the shinkansen station with a small bus and taxi depot integrated into the station. Commuter station is also located in the rear. One of the shinkansen platforms - sorry for the dark pic., will get a better one next time. A small logistics company...... Mardon 3 Link to comment
macdon
Residential section of the layout ...........still unfinished. Another rear pic of the backside....... Overview pics........ ............and you know that you're bored when you start making paper truck shells for the Tomytec moving bus chassis :D http://youtu.be/nSOKig1-aQ8 Mardon Edited October 12, 2014 by macdon 3 Link to comment

Densha
Well, but I also have a case of my stuff spread out over several places and particularly not where I mainly live. Don't really have a way to get it here either so gotta wait until someone can help me bring stuff. Link to comment
