macdon
Wow Mardon That's an awesome layout. I wish I had that kind of space. Is that 4x8? Where did you find your roadway decals if you don't mind me asking? Thanks Thomas! File is a close copy of the kato station roadway but reversed. Modified with parking and was done thru a printed decal mounted on sintra board. Size of the roadway is 10.5" x 7'. The shinkansen table layout size is 4' x 10'. I have the roadway file if you're interested. You can also manipulate it in photoshop to your preference if you wish. Mardon 2 Link to comment
tossedman
Mardon I'd love that roadway file if you don't mind sharing again. I thought you cut up the actual Kato road plates. Great work again! Cheers eh, Todd PS - there's a pint or two of beer waiting for you here if you ever head north and hang a right. Edited December 2, 2013 by tossedman Link to comment

macdon
Im thinking about a backdrop for the layout and I currently have 2 options: 1. paper model facades with about 1" thick built-up sides for a 3d effect. Possibly mounted on sintra with a sky background. 2. straight up printed file of buildings on an outdoor decal mounted on sintra. (similar to my other layouts) The first one would definitely cost more than double as it requires both printing the blue sky and printing a plethora of facades to fill 10' length of space :icon_scratch: Anyway, Im currently developing the 2nd option of just having a printed file if ever. Its a generic file of assorted buildings done in photoshop. Let me know what you guys think. Mardon Link to comment
tossedman
I'm sure either would look good Mardon but would you have to make the facades 1" deep? I was thinking the same but thinking more like 1/4" (6 mm). Do you think that would be enough? Either way, I like your backdrop. Todd Link to comment

Todd Not really I suppose, but varying thickness most likely and 1" may be the maximum thickness if ever. In hindsight however, my first option may not be an ideal solution since I have tracks besides the back wall - any building facade thickness would have to float 2" above ground level to clear trains. I may still get away with it since the shinkansen yard and viaducts do cover partially the back area. But then, any derailments back there would be a pain to get to. I guess this just leaves me with the 2nd option of just having a flat backdrop for now. Thanks for the nice comment, Todd. I will try to tweak it some more. Mardon Link to comment
macdon
A small development has been added in the form of another printed decal/sintra roadway. This joins up with the station roadway on the right side of the layout. I also repositioned the double crossover and temporarily added 2 186mm unitrack straights which I will replace with a kato 20-411 on my next HS order. Mardon Link to comment
tossedman
Looking good as usual Mardon. What thickness of Sintra are you using? Edited December 10, 2013 by tossedman Link to comment
macdon
Thanks Todd. Its 1/8" thick sintra. Decal and sintra are both provided by our neighborhood print shop. Mardon Link to comment
macdon
These are probably the last updates for the year 2013. Hoping 2014 will present more! :) First off is a row of under-the-viaduct shops. 8 shops per side, so 16 total. All different shops - lots of food shops, clothing, bookstore, toy store, electronic/gadget shop and a bar. Base and roadway with parking was made for it. New roadway for the left side of the layout for the TV Tower, etc. If Osaka has the Gateway Tower building for a highway, I sure can have one for my train layout! hehehehe Added catenaries to the yard. It now lacks the 4th track line. Since I presume E7/W7 wont come out just yet, I had to use the straight tracks on other parts. Just some overview pics of the new additions.......... Happy Holidays to Everyone!!!! Mardon 1 Link to comment
cteno4
Mardon, Great progress! Love the tunnel building! You are getting great mileage out of those scale scenes PDFs! Happy new year! Jeff Edited December 24, 2013 by cteno4 Link to comment
macdon
Thanks Jeff and Happy New Year as well! :) Im actually combining a lot of files in doing DIY work - some scalescenes, paperstructure and google image files. I guess you can say I spend a lot of time doing photoshop work .... Lol! Thou I have to admit that this layout has so much DIY work that any progress is really slow - but this is a hobby and you know I love building stuff so Im really enjoying it. Mardon Link to comment
cteno4
Mardon, your DYI rate is better than most buy it off the shelf rate! Really great to see what can be done with some photoshop, cardstock, xacto knife and glue! great thing is that you are enjoying it all so much! hobby bit you big time! have you done google street view for building stuff? you can really find some interesting scenes and decent angles to even potentially print from. but fantastic for ideas. cheers, jeff Link to comment

macdon
Fascinating read and following your layout progress.Great use of a limited space and provides heaps of ideas for layouts with space limitations. Thank you Chris! Thou nothing much has progressed in the last few weeks except for some small additions: My tallest structure to date - 21" high condominium. Even taller than the TV Tower Since the arrival of my spare tracks yesterday, I replaced back the tracks I got from the 4th yard track line. Also added that popular Hanover-Hiroshima tram. Took a break from building paper/card models and went to plastic for a diversion. Assorted brands - Kibri, Vollmer, Tomix and Tomytec. Mardon Link to comment
