kvp
I've just checked Nariichi's photos of the sales meeting. The steam loco and the cars look great, but one thing that surprised me was the mystic home made lighting insert someone mentioned that came from a secret source from China. That one looked exactly like the bernina express coach lights... (this could mean these secret sources could in theory get unreleased or even unannounced sets through the fence?) Link to comment
katoftw
Don't jump 5 steps ahead. There is no confirmation that any part of this model will come from China. Rumours are like cow dung. If you play with it, you'll have stinky hands. Link to comment
kvp
I just remarked that they are the same design. It might be coincidence or only the design was copied... Anyway it's a very good design. ps: The modification for the steam locomotive is a smaller motor that seems completly hidden. This gives the new variant a see through cab, very much like the first version, but with the weight of the motor on the drivers. I like it! Link to comment
katoftw
Just been looking at AmiAmi. The C50 set has another listing for May also. Original listing is for April. A second batch of production runs? Popular item huh? Link to comment
ToniBabelony
The recent motor developments of Kato with their coreless units really has me interested. Instead of the traditional weight and flywheel, Kato is going for maximising the weight and space of the flywheel and having as little plastic (light weight) as possible where the flywheel can't be. The frames of the steam trains are mostly metal with only the connecting parts and gears being plastic (insulation and no need for lubricants). I wonder where this development with coreless motors in commercial models from big manufacturers will go. Maybe one day we can see more insane variations with actual bogie mounted motors like here: http://barrack-model.at.webry.info/200809/article_1.html (one of my favourite bloggers explaining an experimental build he made) and in the Kato Portram. Guest Closed Account 1
Kato already does HO motor mounted trucks. Id rather have one central mounted coreless motor with plastic driveshafts. Lotsa torque. T-gauge uses cellphone vibrator motors. Dont wanna see tiny motors in N-gsuge. Link to comment
railsquid
Lima did bogie-mounted N scale motors in the 1970s :P Link to comment

mattdwnunder
Here is a picture of the chassis of the new Kato C50. Where did the C50 operate, particularly towards the end of its working life? Link to comment
kvp
Ryomo line, Togichi (noth of Tokyo) until around 1968 to 1970. Mostly with slow passenger trains. Before that everywhere with passenger and short freight trains, including overseas. A similar type from Germany was the BR24. Link to comment
Welshbloke
That flywheel is a marvellous piece of machining. So many other manufacturers either wouldn't bother or would have made it far smaller, Kato have squeezed in as much brass as will physically fit. Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
Is it bad that the first thing I think of is "how am I going to install a decoder in this thing"? ;) 1 Link to comment
kvp
Is it bad that the first thing I think of is "how am I going to install a decoder in this thing"? ;) Not too much if you have a DCC layout and this locomotive is a must have. The answer is rather simple, just disconnect the motor wires and add the decoder behind the motor. If you want a larger one, it's possible to add it into the tender with a speaker and route the 4 or 6 wires (motor, pickups, light) from there. By leaving the headlight always on under DCC power, you can get by with a motor only decoder (even a cut down kato one). Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
I don't have a layout yet, but I do have DCC, and the loco is pre-ordered. And I do know how to install a decoder, just seeing a picture like this immediately gets me thinking about how and where. I don't want to install it in the tender, but I do want it to be somewhat hidden. Probably going for the up against the cab roof option again. Going to use an ESU LokPilot micro, no sound in N-scale for me :) Link to comment

HantuBlauLOL
there is a big enough space in the tender.. Link to comment
westfalen
I put my C56's decoder in the tender and the C12's in the cab roof. The C50 will depend on what it looks like when I get it and what decoders I have on hand at the time, but all the recent Kato steamers are pretty easy to DCC. While we are talking of Kato steam the new Kato catalog, new to me as I only got it the other day so someone may have already noticed, does not show the C11 in the steam pages but does show it in the coming in 2016 section of new models. Are we going to get a new, to scale C11 with the C50 mechanism? 2 Link to comment
mattdwnunder
Westfalen a new 1:150 scale C11 by Kato, I sure hope so. I have had some Tramway C11s on order since Moses was a boy. If Kato brings a C11 out I would imagine that the Tramway C11 will be shelved. If Kato are saying 'new product' it will be a total revamp. Link to comment

Welshbloke
Having read about the history of the 155 Series, they're a canny move on Kato's part. I bet a lot of Japanese people have fond memories of school trips on them. Link to comment
JR 500系
Nothing much for me, just curses for spending more on that 281 series which I thought is going rare only to see Kato re-release it again... 5 Link to comment
railsquid
Aha, they're re-releasing the Kumoha 12. Hardly surprising by the way it flew off the shelves. Link to comment
westfalen
I'll have to see if I can come up with a reason to get another C62. Kato sure are turning out a lot of steam era stuff lately. :laughing6: Link to comment
Robert46
Does C62 come with the coaches in the bookcase or they are sold separately? Link to comment
