Just saw this on the Hobbysearch newsletter - video camera equipped train. I've seen "First person video" trains before, but none that actually look good.

It was released sometime back.. this is a re-release...

I have the set, but I've yet to hook it up...

What are you waiting for???? You gotta post video of that, when you get it working!!!!

Two things:

-This is a train with a lipo battery inside, so it must be kept charged or the battery dies. Run it regularly or at least charge the camera car for 15-20 minutes at least once a month.

-The train won't connect to the wifi, it has it's own wifi hotspot (japanese allowed bands), so you must disconnect from the net and connect to the train.

That camera train requires a smartphone app, doesn't it? In that case, if the app someday gets pulled or stops working, you're left with a completely useless piece of technology. I wouldn't put my bet on something like that.

In theory you can copy the app out of your rooted development phone, but reverse engineering the protocol could be possible (unless it's encryped). If someone does it and i could get it to work with a windows laptop and a web proxy (for a large screen display and multicast streaming at shows), then i will consider it.

I've already had this happen with ancheap wifi spy cam I was playing with. App died wirh an so rev and no longer being supported it looks like... made me more wary of software solutions for something like this. These days is so much just move on to the new thing and abandon the old...

Just imagine if DCC was not backwards compatible and you would have to replace all decoders if you upgrade or change anything. And most decoders would stop working when the next update comes out for your central...

The basic idea is to only use software or hardware for your layout/modules, that you can support yourself long term if needed.

This is the reason why i'm looking for the camera car wifi protocol and the TNOS low level i/o protocol. If it's documented and supportable, i'll use it, otherwise won't.

This seem to be hidden under the radar...

While I already have a Yufuin... this is the famed Tomix TN model, and also a Kiha-71 while the one I have is the MA Kiha-72, so technically i'm not collecting trains ~ haha

Famed for a reason. It's a great model! Personally, I think you can just chuck the MA KiHa 71 in the bin if compared to the Tomix's version.

How so? What’s the big advantage over the Micro Ace Version besides the couplers obviously?

Just compare the pictures. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10119744 / http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10049545

Tomix has more(detailed) underfloor parts, "Yufuin-no-Mori" signs are actually elevated, whereas they're only printed onto the flat body on MA. And most of all, come on. It's Tomix vs. MA.

Thanks! Not to forget, the additional coupler cost involved to convert the MA to TN couplers...

I'm just lucky I got the MA Kiha-72... so now i have 2 different Yufuin no mori ~~

I've been meaning to convert a lot of my MA fleet to Tomix couplers.  I have both the MA Kiha 71 and 72.  Plus a lot of Kiha 40/47/48s.

Nice ~

Sorry for the off topic, but i guess asking a Kyushu expert should be right for this question ~~~ Do you know if any maker has produced the 815 series? I haven't seen them around before...

I'm no Kyushu expert but I know that they were only available in kit form from an obscure supplier and it is no longer available, it also relied on some now discontinued Greenmax parts to power it, mind you Greenmax is more than likely to bring out one in the future given they have produced a number of JR Kyushu EMUr's of late. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10098339

Yes, no completed forms available.  Surprising since GM jumped straight to 817 series but didn't do the 815 in completed form.  Which is 80% the same train.

Yap, except for perhaps the headlights and the printing on the sides that says 815 series commuter train... At first look, i thought they looked like glasses or something, but after a few more looks they seem to grow on me...

Few new PDFs popped up:

The 287 Panda Train is definitively worth a consideration..although I do wonder why they price a 6 car train at 24000 yen and not even make it a High Grade model. It almost seems like they've got something against producing modern trains as HG models...

Is it just me or have the price of new releases gone a bit silly?I do nt buy many new Trains to be fair as I m happy with the collection I have but that may change when I eventually have a layout that I can actually finish and I m happy with. But it just seems that the prices have gone through the roof on new release items. The panda mentioned above being a prime example.

Limited Editions are always gonna be stupid pricey.  No bang for you buck.

But in general, Tomix and Kato have been raising prices this year (2017) after MicroAce jumped up their prices last year (2016).

Although it isn't too bad though in respect that retail prices for model trains haven't gone up much in the past 10-12 years before 2017.
