Kato DCC Install on 800 Series Shinkansen and Sunrise Express

I came home from Japan with a bunch of EM13 decoders and an 800 and Sunrise. The shopkeeper that I could install DCC on the trains and I presumed that it was a drop in EM13 like all the other trains. When I got home and opened it up I was met with a surprise which was that there was no drop in. Can I hardwire to EM13 to the pickups or do I need to get another decoder?

800 series you cannot. Very old molding.

 

Which sunrise express do you have?

Don’t have the train myself but nothing on the instructions or on Kato’s website indicate it’s a DCC “friendly” model.

Yeah I am sure that inst dcc friendly also. I have that model also. Another of Kato using old molding for current releases.

Confirmed. I have the Kato 10-1565 Sunrise Express (same as 10-1564) and it is not DCC friendly, there is no slot for the EM13. I’ll also have to look for a solution. 
@BulletTrain816 What are you prepared to do? Any experience in soldering?

Yeah I have experience, equipment and help from my train club.

If you guys do install dcc into those trains please consider documenting it for the DCC forums on JNS.

Yes please if you don’t see a topic already on a train for installing dcc in the forum, just start a new one for that train and add in anything you can to describe what you did. Much help to those coming along later giving it a try.
