Yakumo, then and now: JR West’s 381 and 273 series
miyakoji posted a topic in Japan Rail: Pictures & Videos
Two videos by railway consultant, and apparently former Meitetsu employee, Itsuki Nishiue. Detailed looks at the inside and out, useful if you’re modeling either of these types, and I would imagine generally interesting to this audience :). The 273 retains the tilting ability, which I thought would be eliminated. Very appealing design overall. And of course it’s great to have this document of the 381 as presumably none will be preserved :(. If I’m reading correctly, the Kyoto Railway Museum doesn’t have a 381. Hint hint.- 4 replies

381 series on the Hakubi Line, November 2023
bikkuri bahn posted a topic in Japan Rail: Pictures & Videos
Last autumn season for the 381 series. Very nice videography on the Hakubi Line, with various liveries of the Limited Express Yakumo. At 4:45 one of the four daily container freights that use this line, headed by an EF64. *As an aside I will do a round trip on the Yakumo service later this month (Okayama-Izumo-shi) on an all-day out and back excursion by using the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen (Nozomi) to get to Okayama from Shin-Yokohama. Will be my last ride on these iconic trainsets.- 4 replies

Great video by Akechi Railway Video Center One of the YT algo quirks I guess that this uploader doesn't have more views. Really nice videography and editing. As far as I can tell, the locations shown here are around Neu, Muko, Ebi, and Hoki-Mizoguchi stations on the Hakubi Line. 4:15 possibly around this spot along the Hino River 8:30 at Neu Station, an Okayama bound Yakumo departs under snow 10:00 seems to be the same movements as above, but there's no snow falling or accumulated on the platform. Earlier, or a different day? 12:00 I think the same as 4:15 looking the other direction 12:30 a Yakumo passes Kurosaka at night 12:45 I think it's Niizato station, which looks a lot like Nunohara, another station on a curve some distance south 14:50 the coolest scene in the video I figure there will be more videos like this with the retirement of the 381 series coming up, I'll add them in this thread.

Replacement for 381 series 'Yakumo' coming closer
Densha posted a topic in Japan Rail: News & General Discussion
On Japanese television there have been reports of test runs that will take place in search of a replacement for the 381 series on the Yakumo limited express service. The television program shows a JR Shikoku 8600 series, although according to one of the comments on the Facebook post there have been test runs with this train type on JR West territory already last month.
