What did you order or the post deliver? (Japanese N Gauge)

No trains but bought Tomix’s new convenience store along with some other model supplies from my preferred independent model shop. The owner also kindly gave me a guest ticket to next weekends Kato Diorama event which he’ll be helping at again.

The new building has an impressive array of interior and exterior details and does better reflect the design of most 7/11 stores than the older one does these days.

...next weekend's Kato Diorama event...

Ooh, time to ask Mr. Kato if he's got any plans for more nice steam locomotives? We could do with a nice new 9600 to complement the 8620. Or maybe we could get some more 8620s in different versions... (wallet runs away and hides)

Latest snag: a Tomytec Iyotetsu MoHa 2000 for ¥4,700 which is a pretty fair price for both the tram and previous-user-installed motorized chassis in my opinion. It should join Hiroden 1901 and 707 shortly in Osaka. And yes, you read that right... I finally did the thing. I brought a 'modern' tram. My justification being that I did see the real thing... wha, you want proof or it didn't happen, you say? Fine, fine, here you go...

I've also snagged a TM-TR04 power unit to go with it from a Zenplus seller as they actually had it in stock whereas a cheaper Yahoo! Auctions listing stated it was a backorder item, which makes me a little wary. Potentially I'll also walk away with an extra TM-TR01 power unit too, but no guarantees there, there's still time on that auction.

My Utsunomiya Light Rail Type HU300 #HU301 Lightline LRT arrived today. This is different than most Tomytec releases in that there is a tram stop shelter included in the package. This is good as the Kato 43-730 tram stop hasn't been available for some time. The LRT uses a TM-LRT04 drive.

The door arrangement is good for right  hand operation with four doors including at the extreme ends of the tram.

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas. Only a hippopotamus will do!”

Ok perhaps more Moomin.

So this ugly brown monstrosity landed on my doorstep today. I must say it is very well realised. I was slightly miffed by the price point initially but I can see where the development went.  It is positioned in the SL price bracket of around ¥15,000 but can be had for ¥10,500-¥13,000 from the usual discounted retailers.

The mechanism is quite interesting in that the forward main bogie has very minimal movement whereas the rear bogie and pony wheels have a fair bit of articulation. The silver streaking looks tampo printed and is very crisp. Due to the prototype consisting of 1 preserved locomotive, the number plates are pre installed so no option to recreate unit 2 or 3 for their very short existence. Hand rails are also preinstalled in this model which is a plus as they’re always my least favourite detail to apply. The model does come with some additional roof details such as flare and radio antenna which will need holes drilled to apply these.

There is also an additional headmark holder and 4 headmarks are supplied as well as both a dummy, knuckle and rapido front coupler. It looks like a standard SL dummy so it may be possible to use the business car knuckle to have a body mounted working knuckle on the front.

Two days, two packages and one more to come tomorrow! Here’s rounds 1 and 2 so far:

Round 1 (Zenmarket):

  • Tomytec Iyotetsu MoHa 2005 in orange livery - finally got one! - with preinstalled TM-TR01 chassis.
  • Tomytec Hiroden 1900-class number 1901
  • Tomytec Hiroden 707, the first ‘modern’ tram in my collection
  • One Tomytec TM-TR01 motor chassis
  • One Tomytec TM-TR04 motor chassis for Hiroden 707.

Round 2, of course was the new Kato EF55 1, purchased from PlazaJapan and arriving today in a box proclaiming that I was a ‘important person’. Well then, I guess that’s true? Buying this one was a foregone conclusion as I’ve seen the real one at Ōmiya and so it had to be had. And as proof have a prototype picture, taken on 5 June this year:

Tomorrow I’ll get the two Tosaden trams and another four TR01 chassis. The difficult part is planning which one of my non-motorised trams gets one of those motors put in it!

Is this thread exclusive to Japanese items, or does any N scale fit? I got some American trains to run on my japanese Unitrack/powerpack.

I actually just now stumbled upon this video. Seems like you'd need to modify the coupler to actually articulate rather than having it be fixed to the body

This week I got a Kato EF200 locomotive and a Kato 813 Series 200 3 car set and a Digitrax DN163K0A.

I also purchased some tiny smd leds to use on the Digitrax DN163K0A. I purchased a DFPlayer Mini to

experiment with and some Flux.

I recently stopped by my local Kumamoto hobby store to pick up these two handsome blue carriages to complement my steam and diesel JGR/JNR stock, shown here with my Umekoji DE10. They also carry the EF55 @Kamome and the KATO turntable re-release, but that'll wait a while as my layout project takes top priority.
