The Oxford 2CV in the background can be used on a Japanese layout BTW :)

Cool, I remember reading somewhere about 2cvs being popular in Japan much like minis were at one point. Am planning on putting it on my UK side of the layout though, I might buy one of Oxfords Charleston c2vs then have a c2v on each side xD.

There's a Charleston (I think) one parked a couple of blocks away from Chez Squid, I must take a picture one day and add it to the relevant thread.

Found an Kato EF66-100 in my mail box. I already forgot that I ordered this on "EF66 day"...

Not a fan of the EF66-100 design, but it was cheap and I guess it's good for pulling modern Kokis.

Glad we shared the same color taste for the Spacia, Miyabi blue!  :)

Isn't it Miyabi purple?

Anyway it's my favourite colour as well.

Yes it's very boring but I have a soft spot for 101/103s and derivatives, Tomix certainly do a very good 103:

though it will no doubt be a while before I get round to risking applying the numbers...

I blame constant exposure via the Squidlet for the obsession:

squidlet-buriki-kokuden.jpg

and he certainly recognises the "iih!" (as in "green" and/or "midori") train.

Nice to have something else in common with the squidlette, I have the same tin trains! And yes I play with them just like he is when grand nephews are around.

I guess we could call it 100 series Spacia Miyabi Purple - Blue ~  I do wonder why it's called Miyabi though...

Nice Squidlet has 3 variants of the 101/ 103s, Yamanote, Chuo and Sobu!  :)

'Miyabi' means something like refinement or elegance in an aesthetic way. With Tobu it is referred to as the purple livery, as the 'Iki' livery is focused on blue. Iki is more an aesthetic form referred to as a more chique form that transcends the common form to come closer to a higher social class.

I like that Miyabi means that, I think it matches how the Purple 100 series looks.

It's named after the Japanese "Miyabi" concept of aesthetics. There's also the "Iki" blue Spacia, named after another aesthetics concept. I think it was just Tobu's intention to give their trains a more traditional Japanese touch.

Also, Miyabi makes for a nice girls name, which is why they named their Tetsumusu Spacia conductress Miyabi Kinugawa.

One thing I don't like about Tomix's Spacia is that they only ever update the colours, not the model itself. Even the latest release does not come with TN coupler mounts which is super annoying. My Spacia has Kato Shibata couplers now which only slightly decrease the huge gap between the coaches.

I was never really a fan of the EF66's either as I am more into EF210's and EF64-1000's, but after spending time in Owari Ichinomiya and seeing a decent number of EF66-100's at work along the Tokaido Mainline I have slowly become somewhat fond of them.

Assorted items I got over the last week, Nippon Soda ISO containers and a TM-14 motor from Nariichi-san, the Keihan K-On! 5th Anniversary car from katoftw, two Koki-200s with ISO tanks I found from a US seller on eBay for a decent price, and a pair of Koki-104s, beach figures, and the Hokuetsu Express train from HS.

I do like the color on these Kokis better than the blue on the Tomix ones (it's a bit more subdued) but the fact they're still missing the step is irritating. Also the Hokuetsu Express is a bit of pain to add a motor to and to add couplers to it to run a two car formation you have to leave a number of bits off of the side with the coupler on it. Could have made them look a lot better if I would have got these:

Indeed ~ Miyabi is a nice girl's name, maybe when I get a daughter i'll named her that ~  :)

Indeed, I found it very strange too that the Spacia did not allow for TN coupler mounts... But there is a method to go around this:

Requires some good modelling skills though, and for me, I simply cant bear myself to drill holes on the model for fear of damaging it....

Banzi Hobby is having a small sale for today only, and included are the new kato 115s in shonan colors for 30% off!  I got a 7 car set for now, and also the new kato unitrack crossing.  Also not part of the sale, but in stock is one of the lit tomytec 103 series destination signs in 1/5 scale.  I got the one for the Keihin Tohoku line for only $20, which will look nice on the wall above the layout.

A very small but expensive package from Plaza Japan.  I am going to carefully decide how I want to alter this, the parts are so small, I think my brain is stuck in HO scale. ;)

The reason I much prefer the Kato E3's and check out the headlights with 2 colors.

Nice! Happy Birthday buddy!  :)  I counted 9 kiha-85s, you got both the basic and add-on sets for the Nanki! Wow! I do hope you got the additional motor chassis too, so you can run them separately ~  :)

I wonder if you can put a tiny color film on the light to simulate this on TOMIX E3s. Would be nice if my preordered Genbi Shinkansen had similar lights.

Something-something I need to resist the urge to order the Kato version since I already have the Tomix one and those signboards look a million times better than the Geomatrix ones I just added to mine something something.

Also glad to see I'm not the only one who sees how long they can make the Kiha-85. I have the old (1990s old) 7 piece model and the newer-ish 3 car add-on, I try to see what ridiculous formations I can make.

Also for anyone who got the Hokuetsu Express HK-100 this part is back in stock at HS which makes the model look 100 times better and lets you have plows on all four bogies:

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10414160

Since it is 3D printed it is a bit delicate so be careful mounting the coupler box to it and the part itself to the floor of the car. Also it looks you have to glue it to make sure it stays on.

Thanks Sammy! Don't think I will be getting an extra motor as I already have the older Kiha 85 5 car set that can run on its own. Now, I need to check my other Kato E3-2000 New Color if it has the multi colored headlights. Yeah, the pre applied car numbers and destination signs is definitely a plus for me as I would not have the patience nor skills to do them. I also really like the spacing between the cars rather than the Tomix style.

It does. Also, I kind of find the red closing lights hard to see. But it's not as bad as the invisible tomix E5 series closing lights.

I kinda like the "continuous frame" (can't think of a better word) of the Tomix versions. And I like the electrified couplers. I had very bad luck with the KATO E3s for some reason. I had to return 3 of them as they were broken on arrival. It kind of made me weary of KATO Shinkansens even though I guess I am just very unlucky. Soon I'll get my first Tomix E3, hopefully I will have better experiences with it.

The headlights are the same as the E3-2000 new color, as MTP has posted pictures of it on his website that shows this:

https://www.modeltrainplus.net/products/kato-10-1255-e3-2000-series-shinkansen-tsubasa-new-color-7-car-set

Now I wonder if the much older Kato E3s mainly 10-221 and 10-222 have this feature... I doubt so though, since they are much older models... maybe those with these models can check them out... Those twin color lights look very nice indeed ~

The Speed Sphere site does wonderful pictorial comparisons of both makers of Shinkansen, but they seem to be down for sometime now...
