Got my new Tomytecs out for some test running (towing/propelling a Kato 115-300 dummy unit, I have the powered unit on order but the dummy makes a good test train).

First Kumoyuni 147-1 had a few laps:

Then Kumoni 143-5, with the minor mod of attaching the skirts to the coupler mounts:

IMGP1343_zpsvewpkhj5.jpg

Finally, a shot with the Kato rendition of a Kumoni 143. Unfortunately both they and Tomytec picked 143-5 for their model! Good news is that you have to be pretty close to notice the numbers:

Still need scale pantographs for these, but they seem to be in short supply at the moment. Might look at the Kato versions as a substitute if they have the same spacing for the mounting holes.

Just realized that Tobu has another virus beside the beautiful Tobu 8000 refurbished sets.. how many cars consist of a full set for this 6050 series? only 4 cars?

These 6050's have a bit of a complicated running pattern. This is their main duty: Between Asakusa and Shimoimaichi they run in a 6 car formation. After that a 2 car set runs to Tōbu Nikkō and a 4 car set to Shinfujiwara. At Shinfujiwara, or even Kinugawa onsen, the set is split again (or not depending on the time of day) and a 2 car set runs to either Aizutajima or Aizukōgen. I this image explains it better: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/86/TOBURAILWAY_ASAKUSA_RAPID_ANNAI.JPG

However, they also run 4 car local services between Tōbu Nikkō/Kinugawa onsen and Tochigi/Shintochigi. Their depot is at Tochigi, together with the 350 Series (4 car) and refurbished 4 car 8000 series, of which the latter run wanman services on the Tōbu Utsunomiya line.

Okay I see. So I assume the tomytec model represents the set which runs to Tōbu Nikkō or either Aizutajima or Aizukōgen. But still, 2 car set is not enough. haha. I always hoping that tomytec makes longer consist, at least 4 car set so we don't have difficulties to get the intermediate cars. At least I can be thankful that Tobu 8000 series were made as 2, 4, and 6 car sets which are great.

Today I ordered Tomytec's Car Collection set of 1955 commercial vehicles. These will look really nice on my rural micro-layout which is set in the late '50s.

Found the Kato 10-221 E3 on Ebay and looks like new and at very reasonable price.  My Kato E3 Collection is complete as I recently also got the Kato 10-222 E3-1000.

The Tōbu 6050 is used in service anywhere it can be used, regardless of the subtype. There are only 2-car sets and are coupled 2+2+2 for mainline services, so they can be used very flexibly. Before the recent wanman operations on the Tōbu Utsunomiya line, the 6050 was also in use there, next to a few other 4-car types. Tomytec so far has made five different versions of the Tōbu 6050 Series:

- Early rebuilt version (Tōbu Access only release, sticker numbers);

- Early new version Yagan Railway (Tōbu Access only release, sticker numbers);

- Late rebuilt version (general release, printed numbers);

- Late new version Aizu Railway (general release, printed numbers);

- Late new double pantograph (general release, printed numbers).

Early versions have claw couplers and late versions have automatic couplers. Rebuilt versions have bulky Tōbu Minden bogies and new versions have more narrow ones. Of the double pantograph, both rebuilt and new versions exist. Of the Yagan Railway, three exist, and of Aizu Railway only one exists. Both however are new versions. This page might help you further: http://www.krfj.net/kasukabe/tbzukan/6050.html

In a few months Greenmax is also releasing the 4-car Skytree train, which I also would like to buy, as this train also runs all the way from Asakusa to Aizutajima. :)

Also got an incomplete MicroAce 922-10 series Dr. Yellow.

I have no idea yet what to do with that one.

Good catch there! Well, if you pre-ordered the MicroAce A1157 Shinkansen Type 922-0 Electric Test Cars First Remodeling, I think you can connect them together to make them a 7-car doctor yellow set, but I don't think they are prototypically correct though ~  :P

I'm starting to love Tōbu also more and more. I've been on quite a big part of the extensive network already, but because it's so fanned out, it's hard to reach all the odd ends, as well as the more obscure lines (e.g. Daishi line, Noda line). I think it's the size of these kind of companies that make them really interesting, as they have intensive commuter networks going on, next to quiet countryside lines with (almost) the same rolling stock, as well as fast and/or more luxurious Ltd. Express trains.

However, in my case, the 8000 Series really isn't relevant, as it only ran for about two years on the Kinugawa line (1986 to 1988), as it wasn't equipped with a toilet (a 175km, 3 hour run from Asakusa!), long seats only, and no suppressing brakes to assist the air brakes in the mountains. Maybe I can make up an excuse and modify an 8000 with a toilet (patched up window) as a little inside joke :P I really like those as well... Next to that steam trains this year! I might need to get a little fleet of C-type tank engines going on soon as well...

I did indeed pre-order that one and was thinking the same. It would be very non-prototypical though and it'd have two motors as well. :P

I bit the bullet and made my first buyee purchace!  Got a brand new 20 series Sakura blue train, both the Sasebo and Nagasaki sections.  It looks great with my C62 and DD51, now I just need a C11 and an EF65 (and maybe a EF66 too).  Oh, and a EF30 for the Kanmon tunnel section.  And maybe an ED73, or EF58...

And another illustrious 6050 Series arrived today! Again, this is an early version (see claw coupling and jumper cable sockets), but not instead of a rebuilt type, it's a new type. The new type was sold as a Yagan 6050, but other than the numbers, it is no different from a Tōbu 6050. However, the Yagan type has spare bogie parts for a Tomytec power unit, whereas the Tōbu 6050 does not, as when it was produced, this power unit wasn't made yet.

Here you can see the two different bogie types that distinguish the rebuilt and new version:

New type. Will fit a TM-08® power unit.

IMG_20170120_151208_DRO.jpg

Rebuilt type. Back when there was a demand for a power unit, Tomytec released a TM-K02 power unit exclusively for Tōbu. It is now succeeded by the generally available TM-25 power unit.

Cool Toni san! I didn't know the 8000 series didn't have a toilet!  Man that outta hurt!

By the way, if you purchase the Tomytec moving chassis, they come with 3 different types of bogies for you to select right? I'm not sure if I selected the right ones for my 8000 series...

Well a package turned up today

And yes, I've added to my Kiha110 pain with Kato's 6044-1 (along with preordering the 10-1169 set). At least I ordered the spare parts pack of the piece that gave me issues, should have plenty now.

Then of cause, I played with the track.
post-4306-0-48982600-1484899046_thumb.jpg
I'm going to have to find a larger space in order to use the Tomix CB station set and some additional bits of track to do what's in my mind.
Edit: worked out why that gap looked wrong to me, it was due to the curved track piece that I was using: a C541-15. A C605-15 is what works in that spot & luckily it comes as a set with the required straight section.

If all is well, Tōbu 8000 Series use FS356 and FS056 type on non-refurbished sets, and FS396 and FS096 on refurbished sets. The 6050s have  FS357 and FS057 types. I think you really can't notice the differences in N-scale, but the main part were the brakes that made it possible for the 6050s to run on mountain lines.

The rest of my Tomix track arrived today. Now I can finally start doing some serious work on my little layout instead of just painting telephone poles.

Missing glass and pantographs?

Now that you mentioned it... looks like it! I'm not so fussy about the missing pantograph, but what am I to do with the missing front glass.....   :(

No wonder I could get it cheap....  The rest were in the ranges of 20000 over...
