kvp
I'm looking for information on the JNR 485 series trains, especially the various cab car variants. So far i've identified a few variants: -KuRo 481-0: old classic bonnet style -KuHa 481-200: classic high cab, with openable front doors -KuHa 481-300: classic high cab, no front doors, single headlight -KuHa 481-1000: classic high cab, no front doors, single headlight -KuHa 481-1500: classic high cab, no front doors, double headlight -KuRo 481-2000: panoramic low cab -KuHa 481-3000: rebuilt high cab And the stranger ones: -Kuha 480-3: classic high cab, invard opening front door -Kumoha 485-200: a motor unit with a cab added later (probably) -Sashi 481: this is apparently a restaurant car, with head and tail lights and a driving cab -and the various one of a kind joyful trains The only one i can't really find any information is the Sashi 481 restaurant/cab car. I would really like to know what was it's purpose and how did they use it? Also if i left out any variant from the list above, please add it to this topic. Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
The sashi 481 diners has auxiliary driving controls fitted for use in movements within rolling stock depots. Typically these cars were in the middle of consists, and when time came for maintenance inspections, the consists (say 11 or 12 cars), were split in half, so these driving controls came in handy. kvp
Thanks. So this should mean the car got two driving cabs, so the train could be split in either side? These are the best pictures i've got and they indeed seem to have headlights at both ends. Very strange from a non motorised car to have cabs at both ends. http://type103.heteml.jp/hk/rail/ec/ec485/td481-30_450_840312%20(27).jpg http://www.jnr-photo.com/485/sashi481/sashi481-54a.JPG Link to comment

bikkuri bahn
Here is a website dedicated to the earlier style bonnet designs(151/181/481). Not the best designed website, but the submenus may provide a lot of info: http://homepage1.nifty.com/BONNET-EXP/mainmenu.htm http://homepage1.nifty.com/BONNET-EXP/quick.htm pictures of parts/components: http://homepage1.nifty.com/BONNET-EXP/special7.htm 1 Link to comment
