Rice Fields or Paddies

In some of the Japanese magazines I see pictures of small rice fields on layouts.  Can anyone tell me how to model these and which materials I should use.

folks have used straw, scenery grass etc and planted their own. others have used fur fabric, velcro or astro turf and cut back to just small bits left as plants in a field.

Thankyou for the ideas.  Ochanomizu-san, I like the idea of buying the ready-made product but I am doing HO-scale.  It should still work, though, and give at least the look of rice fields.  I'll get one with my next order and see how it looks.

the tomytec fields are not super impressive. even at n scale the lack a lot of detail and are more on the perceived scenery side than real scenery. i was pretty underwhelmed when i got mine. something i could have made in 5 minutes with some paint and a bit of glue and some ground foam. they actually feel undersized for n scale, so will be really tiny for ho plus the row spacing will be really tight.

 

these might work for you to do small plants.

rest of field can be flooded with acrylic gloss medium to make water. base just painted brown. or could just paint the field base smooth with a muddy brown gloss paint to be the water and then glue the rows down on top to be super simple.

 

i'm really surprised that no one has come out with something commercially that does rice paddies well, seems like there would be such a huge market.
