Determining Train Type

Hiya,

I've noticed on some topics, people discussing services from Hyperdia being a specific train. How is this determined?

Cheers

I'm not sure specifically what your question is, but hyperdia will show the level of service (local, express, ltd. express, etc.), but it will not show the rolling stock type (most timetables don't).

Yeah, one topic I've seen people say a certain service is a Series 500 but all I can find is whether its a Nozomi, Hikari or Kodama service level.

Thanks for confirming though.

You'll have to refer to the paper timetable (JTB's Jikokuhyo for instance) to find out the rolling stock type for shinkansen services.  The paper timetables also include the train numbers for all JR trains (the numbers used on the working timetables), which are used by railway employees when communicating with each other, and help in identifying train type- diesel railcar, emu, or locomotive hauled.

Hello Mr Lucazone,

Hyperdia does not advise service type.

For shinkansen you can use the Tabi-o-ji: http://www.tabi-o-ji.com/shinkansen/schedule/schedule_en.html

For example: choose from Hakata to Kokura tomorrow morning from 6:40am.  Choose Kodama and Tsubame service.  You will see Kodama 734 is 700 series, Kodama 852 is N700 and Kodama 736 is 500 series.

Click on the service number to get service details.

I'm sorry, this website is only for shinkansen from Tokyo to Kagoshima.

I will try to find other infos for you.

Thank you E6 for the linky! It's great to know the rolling stock! Wish there were more lines covered though, especially those by JR East since most of the very beautiful trains such as the E2, E3, E4, series are covered there...

Hello Gentlemen,

You are most welcome.

Here are several other timetables:

This one shows type of service: http://english.jr-central.co.jp/info/timetable/index.html

My favourite - JR Kyushu: http://www.jrkyushu.co.jp/english/time_table/time_table.html ... suddenly one realises the joy of riding or collecting the trains of Kyushu.

JR East timetable is also quite interesting: http://jreast-shinkansen-reservation.eki-net.com/pc/english/common/timetable/e_nagano_d/index.html
