JR Shikoku to get new rolling stock for Yosan Line

Recommended Posts

Well it's behind a paywall, but the third post in the Ompuchaneru thread appears to sum it up nicely:

- all rolling stock between Takamatsu and Matsuyama will be EMUs

- 1 car costs about 300,000,000 yen (about 3.8 million USD), all 14 will cost 4,000,000,000 yen (about 50.6 million USD)

- Amongst the 14 new cars, 12 will have driver's stations, indicating that consists will be shorter

The Nikkei article says that currently 1 train in 4 is diesel.  The move to new, energy efficient EMUs will save 140,000,000 yen (about 1.8 million USD) per year in fuel and maintenance.  Expect to see them in 2014.  JR Shikoku seems to get less new equipment than of the other JRs, so this is pretty cool.

Unfortunately shorter consists seem to be a trend when replacing trains, many times I've ridden a nice shiny new, but standing room only train when previously it was a two or three or more cars longer train with room to get comfortable.

No new name for the class or conceptual images of the new series?

Nothing outside of the currently last post in the Ompuchaneru thread where the guy thinks it will be the 3000 series, based on JR Shikoku's recent numbering pattern.

And when they get down to buying new equipment it is usually of a design totally different from the other JR companies, which makes for some added interest.

Cheers NB
