hey hey,

Does Hokkaido run any electric locomotives?  I know there are a number of EMUs, but the only locomotives I am aware of in Hokkaido are diesels.. DF200s, DD51s, etc...

Yeah, they run electrics. The 731, 735, 789, are all electric.

Yeah, I know they have electric train sets.

I'm asking if there are any electric locomotives..  EF66s? EF81s? etc etc..

Shashinka is right, the ED 79 is the type used in Hokkaido, on the Tsugaru Kaikyo line through the Seikan tunnel.  North of Hakodate loco haulage is in the hands of diesels.  Until around 1994 the ED76 Bo-2-Bo type was used on trains (passenger and freight) on the Hakodate Main Line between Asahikawa-Iwamizawa-Sapporo-Otaru.  With the introduction of the 721 series EMU and the discontinuation of coal haulage, the ED76 type was retired from service.  I remember the whiplash-inducing starts on the 50 series passenger trains hauled by these units on Hakodate Main Line locals (circa early nineties).
