Kiha 91

Hi,

I have one of the original run ( was that 2004?). MA have re-issued it recently, I believe.

Basically it is a combination of cab cars with two first class trailers. All the cab cars have lights which can be switched out. So you can run as many as you like between the two outer cab cars which have dummy couplers.

I fitted mine with Tomix TN couplers which improve matters considerably.

All the cab cars have dummy underfloor diesel engines while the first class cars do not.

The cab cars look similar to Kiha 65s with regenerative braking hence the equipment on the roof.

I know the real thing ran on Honshu but mine will be used on my Kyushu layout along with all those other items that I could not resist. (DD54s)

awesome thanks for the info.

so that one is improved over your version then ?

Is centre car the motor?

Reason I ask is will be running as a 3 - 4 car on my layout till I get a house and build a larger layout in several years time haha.

Also is it quiet?

Thanks in advance!!

Just a nitpick, but the roof-mounted equipment are radiators to cool the big 500hp engines that drive these units.

from a kiha 181, a contemporary design with the kiha 90/91 series:

http://www.hwjapan.com/sh/ACE10593.aspx 30% off for this baby.

anyone have this. It's an old model 2004 production but the detail looks good and i like the look of this.

just wondering if it runs good. Although 8 cars is a large bit too big for my layout haha it would take my whole longest straight

This is not an old model, it was issued in august last year and it's also not a 8-car set but a 7-car set. It's a mistake, just count the number of cars. The motor is the one in the middle and you can obviously run this as a 3 or 4 (or 5 or 6 or 7) -car set.

Interesting Bikkuri, I've observed those radiators on the 181s many times but never really thought about them--I guess I was thinking they were for interior A/C, not for the engines.  There are large louvers behind the cabs on the 181s, are those the A/C?

The cab units don't have the rooftop mounted radiators (unlike the kiha 91), so I think the cooling equipment lies behind those louvers.

too bad can't buy a motor car seperately

is there any difference between that and kiso http://www.hwjapan.com/sh/ACE10595.aspx besides the extra car micro ace fail to define if there is.

to me they look exactly the same. for $50 less i'd sacrifice that 1 car ...

Regarding the prototype. the Kiso was an express train on the Chuo Main Line, while the Norikura was an express on the Takayama Main Line.

Hi

My MA Kiha 91 set runs very well.

Regarding the roof mounted equipment I note your reply. I was repeating what I was told by the person who used to run JR Models. Obviously wrong.
