Japanese Torii

Recommended Posts

Every shrine needs a Torii over the entrance and so, using some inspiration from tanaka_ace at the Tounosawa Blog, I made one with LEDs.

It is actually another one of my slap-dash out-of-scale hideous contraptions... but once on the layout, looks ok :)

Distraction is the key.

Meanwhile, could someone please move this to the Scenery thread? (done! CaptOblivious)

have you guys checked 105 yen stores.

when i was in jpn few weeks ago i say a little display ornament set with a pagoda and a tori in front on a wood base for cheap.

wish i could go back and get a snap shot of it.

would have been good to rip it off and place on the board as well.

although you miss the fun of making your own.

LOL inflation hit the 100Yen stores i guess! they are still dollar stores here in the US!

I always cruise the dollar store for hobby items like emery boards (great plastic files), plastic trays for parts and such, etc.

Also been cruising the 99 cent stuff from china on ebay and there are a few things coming i hope will be interesting little hobby alternatives. ill post more as i get them and review their functionality!

cheers

I remember on my first trip to Kansai years back they actually sold all sorts of Torii of different sizes at the shrines as souvenir. I recall having seen  several roughly N-scale, though they would require the top ring clipped off. (necklace ring) .

at $22 i think rolling your own could be fun as making 3 or 4 would not be too much more than making one! styrene would be very quick and easy to make these with square stock and channel stock for the cross pieces and just cover once the wires are in place then run them down each leg!

for the vending machines i have some smleds that are in larger housings that should be perfect for the light to focus it only one way (ie out the front) so the machine does not glow! put it in a piece of channel stock styrene and then the face of laserprint on paper (to diffuse the light some) and a small cap of styrene strip on the top!

cheers

Added a new article on adding lanterns to the Temple: http://www.jnsforum.com/index.php/topic,4165.0.html

Note that you can also see the Torii in action in the above posts.

And I've also purchased "super fine" milliput to sort out the streetlights. I'll just make sure I used milliput in other places to make a proper story out of it.
