Welshbloke
The DD51 arrived: If you have one which growls then try adding a drop of oil to the motor and worm drive bearings. Mine is now quieter and improving further with running in! Edited August 3, 2019 by Welshbloke Realised I'd put the numbers in the wrong slots... 2 Link to comment
beakaboy
picked up a couple of sets of the ZJ series 485 a few years back from Nariichi at Model Train plus for the ridiculous price of around NZ $35.00 set. The power chassis runs well, but the coaches are prone to derailments , as you say, caused by the couplers mostly. I also found the chassis struggled for grip when pulling all coaches around a curve and part of the problem is the bogies of the chassis slightly rubbing on the track. A slightly bigger wheelset would make a huge difference, but also would look out of scale. I used track made by Eisen Platz which was an oval set and possibly too tight a curve. good suggestion to mount different bogies. Edited August 3, 2019 by beakaboy Link to comment
shadowtiger25
Well, hobby search got more in and I have wanted one for a while, so I almost broke my back with overtime for it. Should be worth it, now i just need a sound decoder for it https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10493880 I've seen video of this paint scheme doing shunting work, so that's what I'm going to do with it. I plan on dropping in something like this to make it smoother I also have some hauls coming in from yahoo auction that I have been neglecting to post. I will post them when I get around to it for the old ones, and when the new ones come in 1 Link to comment

Welshbloke
Nope, the wheels are on the rails. The frames are just quite wide. I drove it away from that over pointwork so I'd have noticed the noise! Link to comment

marknewton
The Tramway ED71 arrived this morning. First impressions are very favourable. The finish and detailing is superb. It runs almost silently, and is very smooth and controllable. It hauled 35 bogie hoppers on the Kitchenbenchbahn without any difficulty or noise from the mech. I’m very pleased with it. But for the first time ever since I started modelling the JNR the model was missing some parts. The pack containing the brake and main res hoses and uncoupling levers was in the box, but the rub-on numbers and instructions were missing. I sent an email to Hobby Search, but if they can’t supply replacements I should be able to number it using spares from other models. It’s a minor irritation, but not enough to spoil my pleasure at finally having this loco. I’ve always liked the look of these chunky little units and their DC cousins the ED60/61/62 family, and now I have them all. Cheers, Mark. 5 Link to comment
shadowtiger25
The Tenshodo 9600 came in today as well as a brass kit that got stuck in customs for a month. I love and hate the 9600... Its a great model, runs amassing, and has insane detail in places, but a lot of the parts are super glued on by the factory and are prone to popping off... but look at the cab! I want a cab like that in all my SL's! I've never done a brass kit, so it should be an interesting challenge 5 Link to comment
MichiK
Another one from Aozoradensya. And this time it is definitly not going to be a 103系... 😉 2 Link to comment
Welshbloke
The EF510 arrived: Interestingly it copes with R370 curves quite happily, hauling the Micro Ace kit or a Tomix KoKi 106. I wonder if I missed something in the description of the coupler conversion kits about needing them for reverse curves? 4 Link to comment

I've (partially) built a few N scale ones, and working on some H0j and H0e ones. The first 2 or 3 didn't come out too well, but after that I got the hang of soldering them. I've not used any flux for soldering, but I might try that at some point, since it might make the solder flow better and create cleaner joins. Most important is to take your time and test fit things. The instructions aren't always correct 🙂 1 Link to comment

DC as far as I know, the headlights only come on after you drive away on a pre-PWM Kato controller. I'll have to make more of an effort to find some better wheels for the Micro Ace coach now, as I have the matching KaNi and one of the Kato Hokutosei coaches on the way at the moment. Link to comment

I wonder if I missed something in the description of the coupler conversion kits about needing them for reverse curves? Nice. As the driving bogies have independent motors, this probably allows it to navigate the tighter curves, but I would assume this throws the body mounted coupler out quite a way. I have the de-liveried Hokutosei version which is now with JRF. I still need to weather it as the real loco is pretty filthy in the pictures I’ve found. You’ll notice the added flare, antenna and horn as well as the air hoses from the upgrade kit. Air hoses seem to be pretty standard so if you have any spare from your other locos, they can be applied. The ones in the add on kit are EF65 versions as they come on a sprue with EF65 bogie parts. I painted my cab interiors green. I use the KTM website quite a lot to look at some of the details on the higher end models to get some inspiration. https://kmt.co.jp/brands/ooj/ef510/ 2 Link to comment

Welshbloke
The couplers end up over the outside rail on the R370s. Which is exactly where the couplers on my OHaNeFu 25 100 and KoKi 106 end up, so it isn't a problem. Like I said, I suspect the replacement parts might be intended for reverse curves rather than continuous ones. I know the Tomix KoKi instructions say that they can handle R490 but not reverse curves that tight (they'll also track through R370 with no horrible noises or derailments). I just use a 246mm straight to avoid the problem when building sidings. Adding details to the end might well cause a problem though, as there isn't a lot of clearance between loco and coach on the inside of the curve. I've now cut the headboard off the sprue and added it, the magnetic mounting is very neat! Link to comment
marknewton
A selection of parts and vehicles, mainly for the Bakuromachi cameo. The wheelsets are for the OneMile SeRa1 hopper cars. The pantographs are replacements for the damaged parts on an ED79 I bought very cheaply. The headmarks are also for the ED79. The red Honda will be parked outside the noodle shop. The tiny Mazda three-wheeler will be parked outside the little workshop. The windows and doors are for the various structures, the single headmark is for the C59s, and the bus will go between the crossing and the backdrop to block the direct view. All the best, Mark. Kamome
Love that Daihatsu Midget. I’ve been looking for some Tomytec ones for a while in HO but to no avail. Did find a nice Prince Clipper truck however. I will keep searching. Annoying I won’t be making it to JAM this weekend as I’m sure I could find something there. 1 Link to comment
marknewton
That three-wheeler is a Mazda T600. If you’re looking for Daihatsu Midgets, they were made by Time in their RA80 range in a couple of different versions. The Prince Clipper trucks are very nice little models as well. https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/list/3065/0/1?Make=Time Cheers, Mark. Edited August 13, 2019 by marknewton 3 Link to comment

Kamome
I only have a few. Mine are all from Tomytec and were mainly scavenged from little independent model shops around Fukuoka. They always seem difficult to come by. With Tomytec producing an increasing range of narrow gauge, I was hoping that they would again produce more of their Showa period vehicles. This is yet to be the case. The scenery side of Japanese HO seems poorly catered for. Anyway, I’ve mainly come across police vehicles, 2 Nissan’s Skylines and a Nissan Caravan. The other 2 are a Toyopet Masterline and a Prince Clipper truck. I think Prince eventually merged with Nissan as I’m sure I’ve seen Nissan Clippers. 2 Link to comment
Kamome
Stumbled across this JNR era OHANEFU 25 from Kato at a Book Off (chain of used book stores) I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of HO from Kato, Tomix and Tenshodo they had, in addition to the usual mix of junk and toys. Anyway this coach set set me back ¥3000 and had lighting already installed, which is a nice bonus. Lettering was expertly applied and all detail spares in the box. A good addition to run with my 12系coaches. Just need a couple of OHANE 25s but the Kato ones have been out for a long time. 3 Link to comment
Kamome
Looks like my yard has a new contract with Seino. Just had 4 new Kokis delivered. (104s and 107s) The 107s are the newer type without the JRF logo. Nice to also see Tomix including different numbers from the last run of 107s. The Tomix Kokis are a closer colour to the real ones. You can see the tonal difference compared to the Kato version. 2 Link to comment
