KenS
This got me to thinking. I'd listed my collection here back in 2010, but I've bought a number of things since then, even if my pace of collecting has slowed significantly and I wondered how the two compared. Most of my acquisitions over the past two years have been in non-commuter stock (Limited Express, Joyful Trains, Subway trains and Freight, plus a couple of loco-hauled passenger trains). I did add a few commuters (mostly E233) and one Shinkansen (E5). I've also branched out into other manufacturers than Kato, although I still don't have anything from Tomix other than a DE10. It's rather stunning: there are 42 passenger/special trains here, including the two loco-hauled ones, not counting trams or freight. I hadn't counted them before, although I had noted that some didn't fit on the shelves even after I took over more space. Clearly I need a bigger layout. :) Here's an updated roster: Shinkansen:500 Series Nozomi (Kato, 16 cars)E3 Komachi (Kato, 6 cars)E5 Hyabusa (Kato, 10 cars)Commuter/Suburban:JRE Chuo-Sobu Local 205 (Kato, 10 cars)JRE Chuo-Sobu Local E231-0 (Micro Ace, 10 cars, 2 copies)JRE Chuo Rapid E233-0 (Kato, 6+4 cars)JRE Keiyo 205 (Kato, 10 cars)JRE Keiyo E233-5000 (Kato, 10 cars)JRE Joban Local E231-0 (Kato, 10+5 cars)JRE Joban Rapid E531 (Kato, 10+5 cars)JRE Keihin-Tohoku E233-1000 (Kato, 10 cars)JRE Tokaido/Shonan-Shinjuku E231-1000 (Kato 8 cars only, missing 2)JRE Tokaido/Shonan-Shinjuku E231-1000 (Kato 10 cars, incl. 2 bi-level)JRE Tokaido E233-1000 (Kato, 10+5, with single-level replacement cars)JRE Yamanote E231-500 (Kato, 11 cars, original 4-door version)JRE Yamanote E231-500 (Kato, 11 cars, with 6-door car)JRE Yokosuka & Sobu E217 (Kato, 11+4 cars, "new color")JR West Series 125 (Greenmax, 2 cars)Limited Express & Joyful Trains:251 Super View Odoriko, old color (Kato 6-car set, missing expansion)251 Super View Odoriko, new color (Kato, 10 cars)253 Narita Express (Kato, 6+3+3 cars)E259 Narita Express (Kato, first set, 6 cars)E259 Natita Express (Kato, second set, 6 cars w/ diff numbers)E351 Super Azusa (Kato, 8 cars)E653 Fresh Hitachi, Red (Micro Ace, 7 cars)E655 Nagomi (Kato, 5 cars)485-1000 Viva Aizu (Micro Ace, 6 cars)485 Nikko/Kinugawa (Kato, 6 cars)189 Nikko-go Ayano (Micro Ace, 6 cars)Izukyu Black Ships Train 2100 (Micro Ace, 8 cars)Nankai 50000 rapi:t (Micro Ace, 6 cars)JRE 485 Hana (Micro Ace, 6 cars)JRE 485 Yamanami (Micro Ace, 6 cars)JRE 485 Seseragi (Micro Ace, 6 cars)Subway:JR East E231-800 Chuo-Sobu & Tokyo Metro Tozai (Micro Ace, 10 cars)Tokyo Metro 10000 Series (Greenmax, 10 cars)Tokyo Metro 10000 Series (Kato, 10 cars)Tokyo Metro 01 Ginza (Kato, 6 cars)Tokyo Metro Series 05 (Greenmax, 10 cars)Tokyu Series 6000 (Greenmax, 6 cars)Trams:Tokyu Setagaya 303F, Blue (Modemo)Tokyu Setagaya 304F, Apple Green (Modemo)Tokyu Setagaya 305F, Cherry Red (Modemo)Tokyu Setagaya 310F, Turquiose Green (Modemo)Toden Arakawa 7000 Series, "Normal Paint" (Modemo)Toyama Chiho 9001 (white) (Kato)Enoden "Choco-Den" Type 2000 (Modemo)Passenger Locomotives and cars:EF510-500 JR East "Blue Star" (Kato)JRE Hokutosei "Blue Train" cars (Kato, 12 cars)EF65-1118 JR East Super Express Rainbow (Kato)EF65-1019 JR East Super Express Rainbow (Kato)JRE Super Express Rainbow cars (Kato, 7 cars)Freight Locomotives:JRF DE10 (Tomix, Kato Warm Region x2, Kato Cold Region)JRF EF65, JR Freight color (Kato)JRF EF66, "first version" (Kato)JRF EF210-100 (Kato)JRF EH200 (Kato)JRF EH500 (Kato)JRF M250 Super Rail Cargo (Kato, 16-car freight EMU)ED75 (Kato, original and cold-weather versions)Other:E491 JRE "East-i E" Inspection Train (Micro Ace, 3 cars)And see my Roster for photos and other details.I've tried to limit myself to trains operating in and near Tokyo in the post-2000 era, not entirely with success, as a way to limit my acquisitions. Ochanomizu
I'm weary to make the catalog. Including locomotive and track cleaning car I have 96 consists. I do not count the add-on set. For example: 10-260 is counted as 4 x consist, but 10-354 + 10-355 + 10-366 x 2 is counted as just 1 x consist. Perhaps I can make it when the weather is bad. Link to comment
Krackel Hopper
I'm actually thinning out my collection some. My focus is moving towards Hokkaido which is limiting my future purchases. JR 500系
I'm liking the way KenS made his roster photo, with each photo for each train and the data corresponding to that train... Neat idea! Though i do not have a blog, i might come out with a spreadsheet to monitor my trains this way... Thanks Ken! Link to comment
ToniBabelony
My current roster for my future private railway company project: - Odakyu 2200 Series (2 cars, already motorised)*; - Oigawa KUHA 2829* + Keifuku MOHA 1003*; - Kotoden 723 + 724; - Kotoden 601+ 602 (2x). *I'm not too sure if I want to work with these 18m carriages, since the Tetsudo Collection 17 is coming up with 14m trains that will fit the Kotoden (ex-Nagoya Subway) trains a lot better, which are 15m trains. Those I'll chose to use for my project will be repainted, motorised and will receive TN couplers to minimise the distance between carriages as much as possible. Densha
Ohhh... those Kotoden trains look quite good. Are they also from Tomytec?? I can't find anything about the models. Link to comment
ToniBabelony
The Kotoden trains are from Collection 8 (723+724) and 12 (601+602). All 16m cars, not 15m as I mentioned before, so I could also use older Eidan subway trains (like the Hitachi RR did and Choshi RR still does). I maybe should do some experiments later with the KATO subway frames, as these have the motors hidden more discretely, provide direct interior light connections, are prepared for those sweet TN couplers, and probably have better running capabilities than the Tomytec ones. Densha
That should have been quite a hunt if you specifically wanted these trains. I'm not too sure if I want you to be repainting those Kotoden trains; they look already so awesome like this! :) I doubt if Kato frames support the (Tomix) TN couplers though... Link to comment

I was looking for them, but not actively. They crossed my path and were cheap, so I bought them. I won't be using Tomix TN couplers, but Kato couplers though ;) I like them a bit better as well. I have to cope with only three trains so far, with one pre-order coming soon adding up to four. Link to comment

Keikyu
Bleh, compared to everyone else I have next to nothing in actual N Scale trains. I have a Tomix EF66 and a few Blue train carriages that came with the oval of track I bought, a Tomix Kintetsu 21000, a Greenmax JR 107 100 and 4 carriages out of an 8 car Odakyu 2000. Had a few issues with it, so I can't use the full 8. Link to comment

Boy Bill....this thread you started if it ever landed in the wrong hands (the wife) it could cause problems. For example: Me:"Why do you need so many shoes, you only have 2 feet?" Wife: "same reason you have so many trains." :) 3 Link to comment
ToniBabelony
I've made an update on my roster on my blog, so if you're interested in reading up on the plans I have for my small fleet, go here: http://tonibabelony.blogspot.jp/2013/02/model-trains-1.html to read up on my adventures in modeltrain land! In my opinion, you don't need many trains to have fun. It's just that you have to adjust your collection to the space you have available. Also, shoes is a great way of comparing this issue! I should keep that in mind. 1 Link to comment

clem24
I never thought to actually count the number of sets I own, but using my tracking spreadsheet, I count: - 39 complete Shinkansen (excluding my 2 Endo brass sets which will never be complete) - 84 complete limited express/commuter sets (3 cars or more) - 19 complete small sets (usually regional trains or trams 2 cars or less) - 52 locos - about 15 miscellaneous passenger and freight cars.. I don't do incomplete sets.. 99% of my stuff will include the add-on. I can only think of 2 sets where I am missing cars (Tomix 200 K set but only because JR lengthened the trains to 10 cars from the initial 8 and after Tomix discountinued them LOL, and the Kato 189 Azusa new color). And of course the actual shelf space required is almost double the above count since most sets span 2 folio cases. Then there's the 5 TGVs/Eurostar, a whole swack of Amtrak equipment (P42s, Superliners, ICE, Acela, tons of Bachmann and Kato Amtubes), and a handful of foreign models (HK KTT sets and a few SBB/CFF cars and locos). So do I have a problem? Yes I do. And I think the problem is that I am lacking small sets and need more freight equipment. :D Still, I think I am beaten by Massimo.. Ochanomizu isn't far behind.
