JR 500系
I am making the swtich to European Trains - Japanese trains are too readily available and are just too darn inexpensive which explains why I accumulated so much of them and Im running out places to hide them. My rationale for this change would be that I would have less trains if switch to European trains because for $200 I would get a 4 car train rather than a 10-16 car train thus addressing the storage issue. The trade off is probably a 3-4:1 ratio / 3-4 Japanese trains : 1 European. Now the hard part is selling off all my Japanese trains. Day one in April brings a new dawn to my wonderful world of model railroading. Serotta, I concur, I'll be putting my couple hundred Japanese trains up here for sale later today, stay tuned, it will be fire sale prices to pay for a dozen euro trains. Jeff Seriously? I'll be waiting man! :) Link to comment
railsquid
Yeah, Japanese trains are overrated, I sold all mine as a job lot yesterday on Yahoo Auctions for a few thousand yen, and will concentrate on American stuff from now on. Just waiting for the hundred or so double-stack container cars to arrive, then it's time to paaarty, yeehaah! Only problem is once the trains arrive at the terminus, they can't go backwards as the locomotives have cabs at one end only, so I guess I'll drive the incoming locos off the layout into a disposal bin and add fresh ones for the return trip. Gonna be an expensive hobby, I guess. Edited April 2, 2016 by railsquid 4 Link to comment
cteno4
Damn squid you flooded the market! Now I'll only get enough for my Japanese trains for 6 or 7 euro trains. Jeff Link to comment

marknewton
I get x2 for certain locos but x5 JNR D51 :icon_scratch: :) There's method in my madness, as the saying goes. As Martin noted, there can be a lot of variation within a class of locos, and that's very true for the D51s. They were the largest class of steam engine on the JNR, with 1115 examples built over a 15 year period. The pre-war engines had their feedwater heaters and domes concealed by the "skyline" casing on top of the boiler, as well as a radiused smokebox front and cast tender bogies. Wartime engines had a box-shaped dome cover. And there were numerous variations in headlights, smokebox fronts, smokestacks, smoke deflectors, smoke diverters, cabs and tenders. So part of my thinking in having five of them is to show some of the variations within the class. Another reason is that I like to double-head engines, or in the case of the famous Hakubisen limestone trains, triple-head them, so I needed at least three for that. And I've got photos showing the limestone train crossing a double-headed freight train at Nunohara, so there's another two D51s needed. One thing I found when I was modelling US railroads many years ago was that if you only have one example of a loco class or type, it's hard to think of it as being just part of a fleet of similar engines, which is what it represents. You'd tend to refer to a particular engine as "the 2-8-2", or "the RS-3". When you look at steam-era photos of the roundhouse at Niimi there were D51s everywhere, as they were the main class of engine allocated to that depot. That's the impression I'm hoping to convey by having multiple examples of the same class. And also, I really like D51s! :) Cheers, Mark. 3 Link to comment
marknewton
I think I have 5 or 6 C62s, 3 of them to be run as triple header for the Niseko Express ;) I like the way you think, Martijn! :) Cheers, Mark. 1 Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
There's nothing quite like a multi-header steam train :) 1 Link to comment
marknewton
Your not wrong about that! The only thing that comes close is parallel running on multiple tracks... :) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wNV10bDD9aU Cheers, Mark. Link to comment

Kamome
There's method in my madness, as the saying goes. I have 3x D51s. 1 x Kato standard model, 1 x Kato D51-1 with the slug body and the Kato D51 498. I do like running a long JNR mixed goods train with a double header. Much more interesting than a couple of EF64s or similar especially at crawling speed. 1 Link to comment
serotta1972
Updated 17th May 2015 Actually quite happy updating this, cause there were more deletes than additions ~ :) I'm kinda finding that hard to believe, but good for you practicing some restraints. :) Link to comment
serotta1972
A random addition to my Roster: Kato 10-1323 Seibu 5000 Series "Red Arrow" Such a beautiful train IMHO - clean lines, elegant colors with continuous stripe, large windows and that face, what a great design with the chrome/aluminum and 6 headlights. Wanted more info on the train but nothing on Wikipedia. 6 Link to comment
marknewton
They're beautiful alright. Toyama District Railway - "Chitetsu" - have some second-hand examples of these. Cheers, Mark. Link to comment
marknewton
As a former freight train guard, I have a liking for brakevans, too. :) Cheers, Mark. 2 Link to comment
