Fastech 360

Okay, I wasn't sure if this got to the right platform so I'll just repost it.

Bill is probably going to say this is real easy but I really would like to know more about this train so here's the link. It would be great if one of the manufactures would produce this train but it might be difficult because of one feature.

Also the way the new platform is designed, after we stump Bill (yeah, fat chance of that happening) we should move the post to the approprate thread. What's happening is we building a library of footage that if members are planning on designing a particular layout they can go to the "Real JR" and use it as a reference.

Didn't the French just do 350 km an hour?  The Japanese take great pride in having the fastest HST in the world and Fastech 360 is the Japanese reply.  Here's some links:

Eventually this will probably translate into faster Shinkansen operations.

Well Bernard??

360 was a prototype, they don't often make models of those...

As for being the fastest, the new TGV is the fastest train top speed wise, the 500 is the fastest train station to station.

I, for one, am going against the grain and, although it should've been stuffed and mounted, am not too sad to see it gone.

Sure, it was a marvellous achievement, but it's nearly uglier than the 500 Series.

Long live the 300 :)

I still think the 700 and N700 are ugly. Looks like a cross between a duck and a Nike.

Darren, Bernard

Do we have anything in the by-laws which allows us to discipline such heathens for their blasphemy?

500 ugly? indeed!

If I remember right, you're allowed to think the 500 series is ugly, but if you come out and say so in public, you have to pay the consequences, which in the case of JNS Forum is an all expenses paid trip to Japan for all the admins and Tetsudo staff, as well as 1 companion for each of the admins and Tetsudo staff.

Hah, you have all fallen into my trap.

I never said the 500 was ugly... just that this series is... nearly on par (and the 300 is close to my heart :P). Beauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder.

Meh, then you should've formulated it differently.. Saying something is "nearly uglier" than something else, implies that you think both are ugly, just that 1 is even worse ;)

For his punishment, i suiggest that he watch the film clip that I posted to:

  http://www.jnsforum.com/index.php/topic,659.msg4044.html#msg4044

over and over again with his eyes wired open until he sees the truth - like they did with the fellow in Clockwork Orange.

Interestingly, the 500 was designed in Germany

Personally I think that all of the shinkansen are elegant with the exception of the E3 which is a little boring.

Now I am curious - StevenH what would you consider to not be an ugly train?.

Sorry to have caused such a stir... it was tongue-in-cheek as I typed the message.

The 500 is just so out-of-whack compared to all the other models... I didn't say I thought it was ugly... just that this 360 was nearly uglier than it.

The 300 Series is still my favourite... it's all in the jaw-line and strong features :P

No probllem Steve.

It is just that the 500 has such a following with some of us - some more than others - and any opportunity to take the mickey is seized upon.

I understand that the fastech 360 actually has two very different ends because they are trialling the aerodynamics of both. I agree that one is actually quite bizarre looking.

"Fastech 360 S has different front ends to test the most effective aerodynamic performance. One end car has a 'stream' nose and the other an 'arrow-line'. On Fastech 360 Z both end cars adopt the arrow-line shape, which was found to perform slightly better. One car on the Z train has a 16m long taper and the other a 13m taper.

See article below."

Hmmm....I am a bit concerned about your refernce to the jaw line though.

Steven - I really enjoy tongue and cheek humor, it's all in good fun and I personally enjoy the humor. Keep it up! ;)

Oh, ugly to me is the "boxy looking" trains (yes I've said it and now I can't take it back) that run in N. America.

Agreed: The 300 is the handsomest train I think I've ever seen. To be honest, when I first saw them in Tokyo (knowing nothing about shinkansen at the time!) I thought it was the ugly duckling, and the 700's and E4's were what caught my eye. But, of course, true beauty takes time to fully appreciate…

I'm afraid to say my favorite train, or the one I think looks the best at least, isn't Japanese. It's a German luxury long distance express train: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/93/TEE_Rheingold_BR103_235-8_Dresden_2007_04_23.JPG

This specific one is a BR103, but has been in use for a long time. Unfortunately they're all taken out of service now except on some privatized lines here and there. One of the most power locomotives ever built, the ground would actually tremble when it came rolling into the station.

It's had various color schemes, but the one in the picture is my favorite. They're the so-called "TEE colors". It used to run with a string of around 10 cars with a restaurant car and a dome car (you can actually see a bit of the dome car behind the locomotive, the angular roof bits is one end of the dome ;))

Here's a picture that shows the form of the front a bit better: http://technikfreun.de/unterwegs/fuerth/br103.jpg

Pictures don't show how massive the thing was, and how it looked like "don't mess with me" when it came rolling into the station ;)

Martjin, funny you should mention it, that TEE loco is exactly the one my father bought for me when I was 4 or 5 years old. (I actually lived in Germany until I was 6). It was marklin HO, and I even have the dome car.

I'm sure I have a picture of me as a little kid with this train, I have to look it up!  ;D ;D

I have a Marklin H0 version of it as well, fairly new one, bought it last year. Unfortunately, I have no cars. I had pre-ordered them, but the shipment from Marklin to the dealer got lost. Didn't have to pay of course, but would've loved to have those cars =)

Correct, In fact not only do I intend to have my wedding on one, but my honeymoon as well. And believe the train is going to see more action than the wife. I'm going to eat so many bento's on the 500. Hell, forget the wife, I'm going to import a train set to California where I can legally married a 500 :p

I hate to dish out unsolicited advise on matters of the heart. But take it from someone who is married and, hey Bernard, pitch in if you think differently...

Um......don't let your missus-to-be read this site?
