Well, I'm not as fast as young Swede there. Kind of slow and methodical. No, kind of easily distracted is more like it. Anyways, it's time to get back to this project, I may actually finish this one. There was to be something about a plinth so I thought I'd make a plinth. With steps and a roof and a bit of track to park something on. As usual, I started with the computer, drawing up a plan in Adobe Illustrator and cutting things out with the laser cutter. I used 1.6mm MDF and a bit of paper for the roof.

Here's the plan:

Here are the parts:

And here's what it looks like pre-glue and paint. I have some corrugated rusty roofing to go on the top.

More to come... Maybe it needs a railing.

Cheers,

Todd

I had some time today between parent-teacher conferences to make my first N scale picket fence. Drew it up in Illustrator and cut out a prototype from Polybak. It's easy to forget how small things are when you are designing on the computer zoomed in at 800%. The fence posts are .5mm wide and the fence is about 6mm high.

Here's the design. The two layers will be glued together.

Here are the pieces cut out on the laser. As you can see they're tiny! And fragile! I've broken a few already. Oh well, It's supposed to be old.

And here it is place on the top layer of the plinth. I cut tiny holes in the top piece to hold the posts.

Here's the whole plinth. It should look like concrete eventually. Looks like I forgot about a gate though! I'll have to redo that side. I'm thinking the fence will get a nice coat of white paint

Stay tuned... More to come.

Same fence, trimmed a bit and a new plinth. It was faster and easier to recut the MDF rather than redo the fence. Wider steps this time. We're going to let the kids crawl all over this train.

Time to break out the airbrush for some white paint on that fence. It's not glued on yet. Glued in the track and added some ballast. Will have to weather that a bit.

Having a laser cutter is almost like cheating 😄

As if it weren't bad enough that he has actual skills and don't aim to finish the build in a day.

Triple cheating! 😄

Looks like I'm going to the deadline. Is that cheating? Two months? 😇

Well, it's been a couple of hectic weeks but I've finally cut out the base of the platform. I may just leave it its natural wood colour. I like the look. Only a few days left! Gotta hurry! I should'a been like Swede and done it all in a day.

A sneak peak. As I look at images I took I realize how many things need fixing. Little things like putting the stairs right side up. Photoshop added a sky for me. Used tacky wax for the first time ever to add the girl to the platform and the legless driver in the B Train Shorty. Cool stuff.

Looks like I'm going to the wire on this one but it will get done!

Well, here it is. A plinth, sans roof as it blocked the steam locomotive from the camera's view. It's a school day and the kids are off to school. They've walked by this plinthed locomotive so many times that they don't even notice it much anymore. I scratchbuilt the station and plinth and learned all about planting 2 or 3 metre high grass. It's built on a slightly modified cardboard T-Trak module. Learned lots and had a pile of fun. When's the next project party?
