Any Japanese railways running American-like equipment?

Depends on the time period. Early railways in Hokkaido for example were full of American equipment, some of which lasted up to the 1950s.

Think of Moguls and Consolidations with long chimneys and fancy lining, hauling coal through pine woods beneath the big sky, down to south coast ports for shipping to Honshu.

I think(?) some narrow gauge logging/industrial railways used american-built equipment (i.e. porters and similar locomotives).

Tbh this isn't my field of expertise though and you might wanna head over to the narrow-gauge related discussions for more info on them

Great! I may be able to create a decent transition-era layout. I’ve always wanted to model Hokkaido, too.

The following engines come to mind in particular:

Baldwin JGR type #9200
Baldwin JGR type #9000
Baldwin JGR type #8100
Baldwin JGR type #7200
Baldwin JGR type #7170
Baldwin JGR type #3000
American Pittsburgh Locomotive and Car Works JGR type #2850

The following routes were partly used by the locomotives:

Yubari railway
Bibai railway
Jozankei Railway
Suttsu Railway
Kitami Railway
Haboro Coal Mine Railway
Teshio Tansui Railway
Mitsubishi Mining Chashinai Coal Mine Railway
Nisso Coal Mine Teshio Kogyo Works Special Railway

For starters I would recommend this book: http://nankaru.info/english/Old%20Americans.html
