Consider using the Tomytec TM-TR01 or TM-TR04 chassis to repower your Bachmann trolleys, depending on the distance between truck centers needed. Scroll past halfway down here:

My Tram is now available from Kato USA and US dealers. 

 

One caveat: *This is a Japanese Specialty Item. Any repair requests will be fulfilled by KATO Japan.*

Has anyone found a proprietary internal lighting unit for these? I can't find anything in the usually helpful links on 1999.

I don't think the trams support any lighting. You might be able to fashion your own out of some LED's and other componenets, but the trams don't support any lighting out of the box afaik...
