Mudkip Orange
What do you mean by painted trains? Do you mean trains that are painted solid colors (as opposed to modern JR silver-with-stripes) - like this Keihan train in the old livery? http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10097075 Or do you mean one of the special trains that gets some crazy decal skin as a promotion for a TV show or theme park or something, like the Doraemon train? http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10054250 Link to comment
westfalen
Micro-Ace seem to be the most prolific producer of specially painted trains, but you have to be on the lookout as they usually only do one run of a particular model. Plaza Japan have this one at the moment. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/JR-Series-KIHA-40-Kitaro-Train-Microace-A8626_W0QQitemZ200424888597QQcmdZViewItemQQptZModel_RR_Trains?hash=item2eaa411915 Link to comment
disturbman
I think I made an allmost complete list of "painted train" in a previous thread on the subject. You can try to find it. The 781 Series Doraemon Train is the most obvious choice, a very colourfull train. But like many other painted trains it's allmost impossible to find new for us Gaijin. Anyway, to score such trains the best places will be Ebay, Yahoo Auctions and I think Popondetta's second hand section (as a matter of fact Popondetta have a Doraemon train set in stock). They still have some Joyfull Trains and Special Livery Trains in the "not previously own section" but not a lot. At the moment, the painted train offering is very limited, the Doraemon is gone, the Painted Kihas are allmost gone and the last strange/colourfull train that are easily accessible are the Joyfull Train sets. Myself I like the golden Gracia set, the "Fish Lips" Train, the Edel Tango Spur train (on sale at HW for the moment) and the 485 series Silpheena. Link to comment

Martijn Meerts
The Doraemon train is absolutely wonderful, very well done paint job on that one. I put up a large picture some time ago of the train, showing each car from the side, so you can clearly see the paintwork. http://www.jr-chiisai.net/_div/trains_temp/doraemon_big.jpg Link to comment

Fat Al
I think that livery is of a really famous amusement park near Mt. Fuji. Too bad there aren't any bigger pictures to look at... Link to comment
cteno4
Perhaps it might be the Fuji-Q amusement park near fuji. they have a thomas land there at the park. http://www.fuji-q.com/fuji-q-en/main/e-main.htm it will be interesting to see what the characters are! the Choshi Electric Railway `Momotetsu`mc1000 from tomytec is really nice! once you replace the pantograph and motorize it, its right up there with modemo painted trains. wish i had gotten a second one as all in i think it was about $35-40. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10083357 cheers jeff Link to comment

Krackel Hopper
That wasn't nice. Jeff knew what he was doing when he posted that. It's like holding a carrot in front of a horse. I suppose I should thank him though, I didn't catch this re-release and had he not posted today I would have not only missed the re-release, but I would have also missed the 20% off sale. So thanks Jeff! Link to comment
cteno4
Bill is right he is not to blame, i found this one all on my very own... Krackel is right it was kind of like bringing a bottle of liquor to an AA meeting. Im glad you got one, it really is a nice looker and from other Green Max sets i have seen im betting very nice detailing. Its really quite a fun design! i especially like the octopus! sorry about the bank account nosedive, but glad you got a cool train! cheers jeff ps did you catch this coming release? http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10110217 if not hurry and you might still get the 20% sale! he he he he! cteno4
some more info on the Meitetsu Blue Liner: It was from kids art from the local elementary school. different art on both sides (whoo hoo! made it worth the price!) Culture zone on the left Inuyama ( Meiji Village - Little World - Japan Monkey Park ), the right culture zone Minamichita Utsumi ( Minamichita Beach Land - Forest Utsumi (now closed)) http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fja.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2F名鉄ブルーライナー&sl=ja&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8 btrain version available as well (i think someone on the forum has this) http://en.item.rakuten.com/a-toys/4543112541505/ would be grand if modemo did the mo770 painted up! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/63/Mo770_%28Blue_Liner_Mini_ver.%29.jpg thanks to matthew davis at jrm for digging up the japanese wiki article on it! and while poking around just ran across another resort painted trains! http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:%25E5%2590%258D%25E5%258F%25A4%25E5%25B1%258B%25E9%2589%2584%25E9%2581%2593%25E3%2581%25AE%25E7%2594%25BB%25E5%2583%258F&ei=t9qzS8PgD4H58Aaf6pnsCg&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CBEQ7gEwAw&prev=/search%3Fq%3DMo770%2Bnagoya%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den cheers jeff Link to comment
cteno4
Ok the blueliner arrived, and its beautiful. if you like painted trains, spend the money on this one. the design is different on both sides of the trains, one side are marine creatures (for the beach land park) and the other side are monkeys and jungle creatures and some park rides. paint job is fantastic. bright colors and sharp edges. the images really stand out well, especially from a distance. the nice royal blue base train color makes the bright colors really pop nicely. the roofs are white so that also stands out from above well with the contrast to the dark blue sides. details are excellent as Greenmax usually does (this is what you pay extra for). the details and cars are very delicate. a windshield, front dummy coupler block and another ac block from the undercarriage had all popped off in transit. i think i have had this happen with all my green max sets. they dont seem to have as solid a assembly as the tomix and kato, but i think this is due more to the fact that they definitely are constructed more delicately (and thus probably lots more to scale) than kato or tomix. all parts popped right back on and a tiny dot of ac will keep them in place if they do pop off again. the interior seats backs are detailed out so will take passengers cut off at the waist -- this is one that may be great for this as the paint job makes you want to look closely at it. green max does have a rather high motor chassis that sticks up about 30% of the way into the windows making this hard on the motor car. perhaps a tomix or kato motor chassis could be used to clear the windows more, but the truck frames would need to be grafted onto them. i have not yet run it, ill set some track up tonight to test it out, but i expect it will squeal a bit like most green max seem to do, but run pretty well. its also a nice sleek train design. happy with the purchase even at the ouch price of $200 (and that was 20% off!). is a really nice addition to the painted train collection! cheers jeff Link to comment
