cteno4
Our new Kia Nero came with a C column detail and I wondered what the C column was, now I know. The detail is curved like a shallow C so figured that’s what the name referred to. jeff 1 Link to comment
Kamome442
One Step Forward I received two parcels today. One is the new etches and the second is the packaging for the mirrors. I decided to open the packaging first, unfortunately it will need to be repainted. This is what I sent to the printers: They decided to be helpful and adjust the file by scaling up the image to fill the page and remove the registration marks around the edges. I placed them there for cutting and folding. The net result is that they are now too big to fit in the wrapper. Oh well. They do look good and luckily reprinting should only take a few days. Fingers crossed the etches are fine. Joe 1 Link to comment
cteno4
Ugh I love it when printers try to be helpful like that! I’ve had the same thing happen and some young kid on the other end of the phone saying well you are wasting some of the page! No clue about thinking about the use of the print, they are so young they think everything is just a 8.5x11 or A4 full bleed print! jeff 1 Link to comment
Kamome442
Yeah, I will need to add text around the boarder for future orders. Any suggestions for some mildly glib text along the lines of 'Please leave this boarder, it serves a purpose' welcome! I will say the etches do look very nice, the 1:80 fences are rather lovely. 1 Link to comment
Kamome442
It's Happening Again Well, I resent the packaging designs that I wanted with 'please do not rescale' and 'this boarder is part of the design' written around the edges. I received a rescaled print with the boarder removed: I sent a rather grumpier e-mail this time, still waiting for a response. I have had time to make up a set of mirrors to test that they work: Overall I'm pretty happy with the results. I decided to make one change to the design, the little paddle shape on the drivers side mirror that slots between the glass and the body is visible through the front window. I have reduced it from 2mm to 1mm so hopefully it will be less obvious. The updated version should be ready in a few weeks. I do have 10 sets with the larger paddle sitting on my desk. I am happy to them out if anyone wants a preproduction sample to play around with. I done some more work on which pack is needed for each bus company. It is becoming quite the list and I am still finding new liveries on a daily basis: I still need to double check all the names of the companies as in most cases the pictures I find have pretty vague captions. Finally I have the new fences ready to go. I am just waiting for a sunny day to take pictures. Joe 5 1 Link to comment
Kingmeow
Just curious and maybe a dumb question. Did you write the messages to not scale in Japanese? If you did, and they did rescale, now I'm scratching my head!!!!!!!! 1 Link to comment
cteno4
Doh! Sounds you got the young lady I had a number of years back who kept doing stuff like that when she prepped files for printing, everything just went full bleed and registration marks and cold scales kept getting removed and all rescaled! One she even distorted 10% on one aspect to make it fit the paper size! She just seemed to think every job should be a full bleed and had no concept of trimming and color check… I think it was 4 runs to get a page of bookmarks finally done correctly to trim up properly. jeff 1 Link to comment

Maybe I would have been better off writing it in Japanese 🤪 My mistake was not writing the message in MASSIVE text. 8 hours ago, cteno4 said: Doh! I imagine they just added the order back into a queue as a reprint without any note to the printer. It was picked up by an employee who is so used to having to adjust prints they jump into autopilot. We very lucky to have diligent people who know what you meant to do and correct your 'mistake' 🫣 I will be using a different printer going forward. 2 Link to comment
cteno4
Digital printing seems to be a different world! It does seem to now cater to folks who just send in a file of what they want to get back at standard sizes. Odd stuff like packaging with trim is big run I guess. Luckily the only jobs I send off now are standard stuff, so it usually just goes thru the process ok. So when they cropped out the boarder to go full bleed did they end up chopping some off or distorting the aspect ratio or did your trimmed card just happen to be A4 aspect ratio? jeff 1 Link to comment

I am not sure but it looks like they layered the image one scaled by width with a layer below scaled by height. Then they centred them to the page, there are little steps in the purple cover top and bottom. Link to comment
cteno4
Oh man they went to some trouble to correct your horrible mistake and even then didn’t manage to get it right when they had a very clear thing to register the extra bit to! You are of course an idiot joe, we have all seen it countless times, you are the person I would see not getting details right in a project and just incapable of all but the simplest things… 😜 They obviously have no idea of who they are dealing with! Maybe in 10pt lettering in the trim area “You crop off my trim areas and I come crop bits off you!” maybe mm/inch scale sown the trim area to show the intended size of the final trimmed piece? Maybe their prepress person can’t read… jeff 1 Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
I think I may have a bit of a problem with all these things ... Since I'm actually actively working on my layout quite a bit, I'll likely need a bunch of etches soon 😄 1 1 Link to comment

How often do you do a re-run? I look forward to some of my etches being a part of one of your projects. I have one set of fences with the birds left it was on the Booth site. I have just moved it over to Etsy. I will order more this week just in case it sells before you are ready to place an order. I am not running any schedule for re-runs. I will happily order more as and when people want them. Link to comment
Kamome442
Third Time Lucky? I received the re-re-print of the bus instructions today. They managed to leave a boarder as I requested however they removed all the registration marks I included for cutting and folding. At least I can draw those in myself and I don't have it in me to contact them again. The next time I need to print inserts I will be using a different printer. cteno4
Sorry they need to have a rolled up newspaper whacked on their nose! You don’t remove stuff like registration marks! What a PITA for you to have to cut and fold without them. Worth a letter this was just so bad, three times and they were still screwing with it. I guess you have to put ALONG each boarder at 10pt PRINT AS TO A4 IS WITH BOARDERS AND REGISTRATION MARKS AND DO NOT RESIZE, CROP, ADD, DELETE OR TOUCH ANYTHING!!! But I doubt their prepress person knows what a registration mark is. Can’t wait to share this one at the next lunch with army old graphics group. at least product may flow now. jeff 1 Link to comment

I have a general idea of what I want to do scenery wise for the sections I'm working on now. I'll probably go through all the etches sometime soon-ish and see which ones I'm certain I will need / use. 1 Link to comment

Martijn Meerts
There, first order done. I kept it a bit civilised I think, even though it was tempting to just get 1 of everything 😄 Looking forward to seeing them first hand. Can't quite add them to the layout yet, but since I've started looking into some scenery things, it'll be nice to have some of them to experiment with. 1 Link to comment
Kamome442
Thank you @Martijn Meerts I will get your order in the post at the weekend. I look forward to seeing the results of your experiments 🙂 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/fictionalcrossover/images/a/a6/WILLYWONKA.png/revision/latest?cb=20200809223046 1 Link to comment
