JNR Class C57 - correct number of carriages?

Hi all, I've got a JNR Class C57 steam locomotive, made by Tomix. Such an intricate model, I love it and was great to see one in the National Railway Museum in Tokyo. Does anyone know how many carriages it would pull in its heyday? I've currently got 10 of Kato's OHa coaches behind mine, but is that too many?

The C57 class pulled a wide variety of coaches over the years.  Depending on the type of oha coaches, a 10 car set is certainly realistic.  Towards the end of steam in japan there was a famous case where diesels were suddenly replaced with C57 class locomotives on the Nichinan 3 express, which often was up to 13 cars long.

Depends on if there are gradients on the lines or not I guess. But otherwise I‘d say everything from 3 to 13 cars would work.

In later JNR days (late 60s to early 70s), the typical average consist would be 5~7 passenger coaches/mail-express cars.  The Muroran Main Line, the Nippo Main Line, and Uetsu Main Line saw many local and/or express/semi express passenger trains pulled by these types. I have seen pics of locals on the Uetsu Main Line headed by c57 types with up to 8 coaches.  10 coaches would likely be a bit of stretch if you want to stick to prototypical lengths.

I've got magnets on the couplings of coach 5 and 6 so I can detach them and run one train with 5 coaches with one loco and one set of 5 with another loco.

 

I've currently got Big Boy running on the other line pulling Santa Fe coaches which is definitely not prototypical 😂 but was interested to know what was re the C57 so thank you.

 its probably to be pushed by one of the locos
