Sad to see it has broken down. Looked (and sounded) to me like one cylinder didn't work in the first vid. I'm glad they are going to fix it though. C57 1 isn't the type of locomotive which career is ended by such little things as "accidents".😄

Probably cheaper to fix than to fully overhaul another locomotive.  I bet JR is pretty glad they had rebuild D51 200 to have a backup when things like this happen.  Wonder if that C56 or C62 will ever be mainline certified if they decide that the C57 is ready for retirement.

They will just fix it and get it out and running again.

 

Two years ago the SL Hitoyoshi was out of action for three weeks with a cracked rod mid season.

Yes, my thought as well. In the first scene you can hear the exhaust is distinctly off-beat. I can think of a number of possible causes. I'd be interested to learn what happened if anyone knows more.

 

Admittedly I'm biased, but I think C57 1 is a beautiful loco.
