First painted train and my first Tomix - pre-ordered for January the Zoo Train!

Alan

Welcome to the irresistible world of painted trains Alan!

My first painted train was the Kato Roundhouse 10-912 201 series old painting 四季彩, and i never stopped since then! The painting on the trains are just beautiful!

It's funny we're still talking about "painted trains" while most (all?) of them just get covered in some plastic wrapping material which isn't really painting.

Shhhhhhhhh!  We know this, but we like them anyway!  :)

Painted trains are cool......i run mine at train shows where they present a nice contrast to the staid and almost boring freight trains.....and kids love them almost as much as bullet trains (my Doremon train is also big with the kids....it travels slow enough where they can see all the characters painted on the sides.....

These just cropped up on the reserve lists....can anyone tell me if the artwork is already applied to the shells, or are these modeller-applied markings?

I almost died of cuteness from those Portrams, but no, I'm not getting any trams; that's way too much out of my train buying policy.

On the note of trains out of my train buying policy, the Fujikyu Evangelion 1000 series arrived yesterday from loco1hobby. Awesome looking train with very high detail but as with all my railway collection trains they will not be powered any time soon. Pictures up in the next few weeks.

Now just the Girls und Panzer bus and the model railway stuff for this year will be done. Next year only the railway collection Keihan 600 K-ON and one other train but after that my wallet is probably completely emptied out and I need to save up for other (more important) stuff, unfortunately. If Tomytec however decided to produce more versions of the Keihan 600, which aren't that expensive, I may have to make an exception.

Exactly. The minute you buy a train with low-platform boarding, you're going to need a part of your layout that has low-platform boarding, and having created such a part of your layout you will now need even more trains that have low-platform boarding.

Thankfully there are lines like Enoden and the aforementioned Keihan operations that board high, so you can run them on the same track as your full-length commuter guys.

The real question.  Is your Tomix LRT Bookshelf Case full?

If not, you should buy them.. and if you don't have a Tomix LRT Bookshelf Case.. you probably need one.

The lady of the house made sure I had these train girl trams on pre-order several months ago.

I also picked up a Tomix case for Koki cars and a dozen koki cars (9x 200s & 3x 107s) to house some my ever growing collection of train girl containers.  I am going to own the most ridiculous container yard you've ever seen!

Ha, I have two (hs half off shipping sale!) and they only have 3 slots left! Have a tama portram I'm making, so that with these would max me out...

Figured the missus would want these!

Cheers,

I needed something for my new tram layout (that's my story, and I'm sticking to it), and just ordered the two Tetsudou Musume trams and the motor units to go with them.

I've actually been meaning to get one of the Tomytec trams for a while, just to see what they're like, and I wanted a matched set of something for the display layout that I wouldn't mind running until they wore out. Trams with replaceable motor units seem like a really good solution actually. :)

Ken,

They are decent runners and affordable. They some times need a little fiddling, smoothing and lubing on the central pivot.

Perfect for your use, can keep switching shells out for variety as well.

Yep, it's quite nice. I have it laying around somewhere at my parents though... I want to have it back here, but that won't be until after summer next year I guess.

I already thought it would have been quite difficult to take everything with you on that plane last year. :P No wonder you left all that behind.

Youch! but this was a pretty rare set to begin with and hey you do get free shipping.

That's a nice set! You don't usually find these on ebay... And i think it's one of the few, if not the only, painted shinkansens out there? The other probably is the Kyushu N700-8000 Limited Edition http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10147199 if you consider it a painted train...

Yap it's a VERY high price alright. I did some homework to compare:

Say if i want to get this set, probably from Yahoo Auctions, since it's very hard to find. And using a Portal/ Agent to help us get the set for us off Yahoo Auctions. You might get lucky if Popondetta or some supplier has it and you can buy it off them without fees, but what are the chances?

Example of one set here:

http://page6.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f132487391

Say you get it at the base price, 25000yen

Use a portal/ agent to get this, commission say at 20% = 30,000yen.

Pay for Japan local delivery + Bank fees + Misc Fees = Probably around 1500 yen = 31,500 yen to reach your portal/ agent

Portal/ Agent send this to you, perhaps another 1800 - 2000 yen if you use SAL or about 2500 if you use EMS (estimate) = 34,000 yen to reach you.

Convert that to USD = US$350

Savings over the listed price US$499 http://www.ebay.com/itm/380730349482?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

A saving of around US$149. Rough estimate on the commission and bank fees and shipping fees and such.

Still. it's hassle free to buy directly from ebay buyer ~
