What did you do on your layout today? (N scale)

Today... I was learning new video editing techniques by finishing a video of my layout. I took the footage before I made the "hole" in my 2nd module.

The garage lighting is quite bad so that affects the video quality. Anyway, here it is:

Did a photo session tonight at the local club.  We need some high quality photos to make into banners to advertise our open houses.  I've been trying to improve my photography skills so I took a bunch with a very improvised light setup.  I'm very pleased with how they came out with only minimal digital retouching necessary to fix the lighting colors.

Hey that video is nice! May I know how you did that editing effect to have 4 videos in a frame? Looks cool!

I finished the background for module 1. The module is, I would say, 90% finished. There are adjustments to make to leaning walls, bit of ballasting and fun detailing, but it is the beginning of the end. I made the photos quickly with the phone.

The big factory is a kit bash of the Kato train shed, the first building I ever bought. Kato plastic is very easy to cut, unlike Tomix.

Industrial background behind the shrine. It's the Tsurumi line after all.

The interior of the factory is full of heavy machinery.

Thanks JR 500!

Yes, no problem. I am using the Serif MoviePlus but I think there should be a similar option in any video editor.

Once you have your four videos in the timeline section:

1. go to tab of "Galleries" then

2. choose "Adjustments"

3. Click on "Transform"

4. choose "Split screen"

5. select "Quad"

6. finally pick up one of the four options by dragging and dropping it over one of your videos (which is on the timeline section).

I attached a picture so I hope that also helps. Cheers.

More work today on buildings for Kamisakaemachi, I have built the stairs for the station platform as well as puttying the wall of one of the platform sections to replicate where it has been rendered with concrete, I will be adding another layer of putty and then sanding it back and painting it. I also started work on the house that is directly across the tracks, I decided to use the Kato 23-405B and kitbash it to try and replicate that house to a certain extent. Originally  I was going to scratchbuild it but decided not to due to not being able to find styrene sheet with the brick pattern that the house uses, the Kato model does have that brick pattern so I decided to go the kitbash option instead.

I did a bit of detailing on the road and installed some electricity poles.

The dry transfers are proving harder than expected to apply. The paint on the road peels off in the first attempt with the rhombuses and the tomare sign.

And finally I run a small operation session with the children driving the trains. This point to point set up fits in the 1.5m table.

You can try sealing the road with a flat spray-on sealer first and see if that makes a difference. The crosswalk and other set looked to turn out well, honestly the peeled paint give an effect of older worn down pavement.

I had spare time so I 3D prototyped an idea for my bus turnout.

01.thumb.png.6b3f46f09b4477dab23133bd2e66bc0c.png

This is a plastic case (in the shape of a bus lane) that will hold, bus guiding wires, magnets and two servo motors (one motor to choose the bus diverging route and another for the bus stop/go function).

04.thumb.png.ab26325e6f022fb8adf5d60febb10792.png

This thing is printed in only one piece.

Here is the first printed prototype with the servos installed.

A view from above (servos, wires and magnets are placed under this bus lane)

A side picture. I still need to make some tests to see if this idea goes ahead.

That is a great idea! I will be VERY interested to see it achieve fruition!  🙂

Not really trains but part of the layout.

The skies are filling up nicely with the arrival of a 787 dreamliner and the “Queen of the skies” the Airbus A380.😂👍

Oh man Paul, sorry for having to correct you and please don’t take offense as I know you’re an Airbus employee but the “The Queen of the Skies” is the Boeing 747 and the A380 is known as “SuperJumbo” amongst other things. Not trying to pick a fight here. 😀

Should work well, I was able to do this well with the faller bus and a manual push pull. Servo should put the wire in much better alignment each time.

Great work, perfect for the extrusion printer! I’m always trying to justify getting a small extrusion printer and this is the sort of thing that makes it tempting!

Thanks JR500!

I am still modifying the design to include a couple of things. We will see soon.

Yes, I am hoping that it would work.

A 3D printer saves time at the end of the day. Without one, I would've done this "bus lane" by cutting pieces of plastic and putting those together with glue.

That traditional way (of doing things) is fine but it has some limitations. Thanks for the comment.

My problem with 3D printers is time.   If I get one, I will want to play with it for everything and never get anything done 🙂

I have a list of a million things I would want to do.

yep same here its the time to set up and get back into CAD yet again. like you chad, too many things to do here!

20 yard lights to illuminate the storage/display yard, these definitely caught the slow boat from China.Oh well, that’s the weekends project sorted.😂👍

Time is a thing but what I do is to give a bit of time to it every day... or to be honest... every week.

Anyway, that's the Kaizen approach and I believe that we (i.e. people in railway models) have been doing it since the begining of our hobby but in the "money" aspect.

What I mean is that since this hobby is not cheap, few people go and buy everything on the first week or month. We get our stuff little by little, week by week or month by month.

The same happens with learning or coming back to something. Putting some minutes per week on something, it could add up at the end.

I just wish I could do that with everything in my to-do list... hahaha... cheers.

I always though I had too many police vehicles from Tomytec sets, but now I wonder if I have enough for a decent little police building!
