I found this image and wondered why the covers are off the wheel wells?

Why does it look like there is only a single axle in there?

Is that replacing the truck for transport?

Too bad Kato doesn't make a dummy basic 3-car set - this would make an interesting consist.

japan's common rail guage = 1067mm.

japan's shinkansen guage = 1435mm.

The EH200 pulling it denote the track they are on would be 1067mm gauge.

E6 abnormal wheels + missing bogie covers denotes temp bogies fitted for 1067mm guage.

Where did you find the image?

Thanks - I was aware of that, but obviously wasn't thinking about it.

Can't say for sure - likely a search on EH200 or Blue Thunder.

When I'm looking for photos, I go thru them so quickly that I don't really pay attention to where they are.

I just saved about 30 ballast train images in an hour or so.

at about 3:30 this video show some delivery cards.  guessing from factory.

it also has the EH200-22 from the original picture towing it.  so could be from same event.

this video explains a lot.  come out of the factory as is.  guessing it is towed to a location where 1435mm guage is available.  where final assembly must be completed.

edit//  Kawasaki exit.

In the video with the EH200 hauling it, it looked like they were using bogies instead of the single axle rig.

What are the small side windows in the cab used for - the ones lower down than the main window?

this is the original pick.  you cannot see the wheels.  the grey you see is the frame of the bogie.  you can click on the picture to zoom in.  you'll see straighter edges and welds and a shock absorber.

the area covered and tape of lower than the main windows is the headlights.
