Today must be train day. I had 3 parcels arrive from 3 different places.

From ebay a Kato K3 Viaduct Set

from HW Japan (I guess my last order from them) 2 Kato platforms, a MicroAce Nankai Rap:t 6 car set and a MicroAce 781 4 car set

and finally from Inobu a Tomix EF510 locomotive and 10 Tomix Koki 107 cars with containers.

I have one more ebay track parcel to arrive, hopefully early next week so I can start my layout. :)

The last of my pre-quake orders arrived today. I"m gearing up for 8ft of n-trak modules for the Edmonton Train Show in September. I'm hoping I haven't been too ambitious for my first project, though :(

For those who wait for parcels from Japan, I guess they will be delayed... :-/

Got an e-mail that my final order from HW was shipped today, will see how long it takes to get here.

Earthquake or no earthquake, Hobby Search got my order (my first order...may it be the first of several! :grin) for the following:

1x Tomytec "Mule" (version w/ train doors);

3x Tomytec MT-04 chassis

3x Packages of pantographs (1x PS17B, 2x PS13)

From Wellington Models (UK):

1x Tomytec TM-03 chassis.

It's beginning become difficult to find these TM-03 and 04 chassis. I wish that Tomytec re-run them soon. Tomix should take them into their regular line...

Got lucky with my back order from HW Japan before they closed - Greenmax #308 Moha-11/Kumoha 12-040, and PS-13 pans coming to kit-bash a Kumoya 22000,22001 - still need a Greenmax DT-11 power chassis - anybody know where I can find one, or have one to spare?

Why is that Newhall charges so much? They are consistently more expensive than any one else. Sometimes several hundred dollars more than any one else on complete trains. Makes me wonder how they stay in business?

Quite a few people think they're getting special trains (Newhall lists pretty much everything as rare, hard to get, sold out from manufacturer etc.) and they feel the cost is worth it. They likely also don't know about the Japanese online stores, or don't feel comfortable ordering from Japan directly.

That said, my Doraemon trains comes from Newhall, and that one was surprisingly cheap all things considered ;)

If you don't mind being gouged:

Found one at Osborn's Models. It's already on its way.

BTW, I ordered from Hobby Search anbd requested PayPal payment, however no sign of the payment request so far. Is this business as usual, or is it because of the quake? They are back trading but their page says that they are unable to reply emails...

Try going into "User Menu" at the top of the page, log in, and see if there's a Paypal payment button there.

Depends on when you ordered, it usually takes a couple of days before you get a payment request by mail. Seems their system isn't automated, or at least not completely.

Thanks Clem, but nope, no such button there. Guess I'll have to wait.

Day before yesterday Martijn. Should have had already received the message. However since the situation is far from normal one must bear with any delays. Especially if HS's employees have to, say, commute to work from the wilds of Chiba or Kanagawa on local trains...

It's going to take a while with what's going on, and I'm sure they're prioritizing Japanese orders as well. We're not even sure of their English speaking employee(s) is(are) at work.

i think its the model of what the market will bare. i think they exist on a population of buyers who dont know (or dont care and just have the $$ to spend) that the prices are way to high or that many of the models are not 'rare' or folks that just want a full english site or buy from an american company, no matter what the cost. two reasons i dont like this behavior for two reasons; it preys on newbies and can sour them from the hobby and/or drive them out before they learn much, and it may stop people from even wanting to get into the hobby if they see high prices on the main non japanese site that you usually run into on early searches or ebay. just bad for the hobby.

Just got my base ball Field kit and the 1720 kinu xpress shipped and arrived just now doesn't look like any delays in shipping. Pics to come later on the weekend as the layout is currently unassembled due to mountain work.

While I agree in part, as a former newbie who survived my introduction via Newhall, I will say that they are a low-complexity way to get started, and aside from the cost (which I considered acceptable at the time) my dealings with them were always positive experiences.

With MB Klein (modeltrainstuff.com) now stocking at least Kato's Japanese trains, they've got some serious competition as a domestic U.S. supplier with much better pricing. Hopefully that will eventually force them to be more reasonably-priced in turn.

All credit to Hobby Search, I ordered these last Wednesday, and received the shipment notice this morning:

Given all that is happening over there at the moment, I won't be sweating on this parcel arriving in a hurry. But I'm very impressed with their speed and service.

Cheers,

Mark.

I can second that HS took about one day longer that normal for the payment request. Pretty good under the circumstances.
