Guest JRF-1935
Like Nick I took a "Major" Plunge into Japanese N Scale This week I've received the Kato EH200, 2-Tomix #2760 Koki 50000, and also have the Hokaido DD51 on the way. Have ordered the Kato #10-489 "Takara" set, Micro Ace EF10-24, Micro Ace A6851 and A6852 Sappora early and new mark beer Hoki's, plus the Micro Ace A3157 Koki and Kokifu set. Rich C Link to comment

Nick_Burman
Decided to take the definitive plunge into Japanese N scale. Have to take it lightly for now as I'm out of a job, so at this time it will be mainly finishing powering and adding pans and MT couplers to Tomytec Tetsudo Collection stuff I have. I also had the luck of finding a complete Tetsudo Collection #2 10-car set in a Ebay store - there goes a chunk of my benefit! But damn, me lo merito! (I deserve it) as the Italians say. This means that I'll have nearly (Mule #2 is missing, so is the Kodansha car - more on this later) all the "freelance" cars ("Tomii Tetsudo") for my private railway, plus two more goods wagons. I won't want the whole collection, just the "freelance" equipment (maybe another car or two), so if anyone wants the rest please feel free to get in touch with me. I'm also looking for the Kodansha car - the one that Tomytec made for that layout that Kodansha serialized and sold in newsagents in Japan some time ago. Several Ebay stores in HK had them in vasts quantities for peanuts, but I failed to act and now no go. Anyone has one to spare or could point me the way to one? Cheers NB Nick,Sorrow to hear you are unemployed. Hope things work out soon for you. Regards, Rich C Rich, thank you very much but worry not. Contrary to the US the Brazilian economy is going full steam and there is no lack of job postings. Indeed, there are certain sectors where companies are mulling the possibility of hiring people from outside because they can’t find people inside Brazil. The difficult part is persuading the posters to phone back and arrange an interview... Between what I saved, my severance package and benefits there is more than enough to get along and pay for my MBA tuition fees which is what really matters now (I’m 6 months from finishing it). Plus a little low-cost modelling, courtesy of Tomytec... Cheers NB Link to comment

KenS
Five packs of Kato insulated unijoiners with two-day shipping (I paid nearly as much for the shipping as for the unijoiners). I started putting track down on the long-delayed commuter line part of the layout, and realized I only had half a pack left, which wasn't enought for even half the station. Hopefully I'll have these by the weekend, otherwise I'll have to hit the local stores, but most keep only a couple of packs on hand. Link to comment

So *you* bought it! If it wasn't for the fact that I supposedly had 2 on order from Popondetta, I would've surely bid on it. Not exactly the smoothest runner but yeah, these seem to be somewhat hard to come by. If I remember the starting price (and there was only 1 bid on it) I probably paid the same as you after factoring in the EMS costs from Japan vs. your price + USA delivery... But yes, the search is finally over. Link to comment

Sorry to hear it took a couple of orders to get it from them. so far i have not had a problem with their used stuff, but i do wonder with the multiple stores if there could be a time when the store front sells something before being taken off the web site. if they have direct access to a db running the website for inventory then hopefully they could check on that before selling one at a store to see if its been bought off the web and visa versa. Glad you have it now! BTW many microace mechanisms need a bit of clean out and lubing when you get them if the growl a lot. then seem to run very nicely. they use a dry lube that sometime i think just does not work or may have poor QA on that process and some are just really dry! cheers jeff Link to comment

There's no growl. I am more referring to it's lack of speed refinement. I find it's either fast, or really, really fast. It runs like my other early MA stuff - just not smooth at slow speed. Well maybe it's the dry lube thing. I'll give it a try. The set does look minty though. The wheels look brand new - no signs of running. On another note, I just placed my first ever order with amazon.co.jp. Shipping came to 4,800Y for 7 items, 2 of them quite heavy. I thought I could really work the shipping system by ordering the Tomix and Kato catalogs but unfortunately, they belong in "Toys and Hobbies" instead of the "books" category and as a result, could not be shipped outside of Japan. Arrgghh! Very bummed but oh well! All the items were already packed and sent by DHL the next day. Link to comment
nik_n_dad
I was in Yokohama last week for a couple of days on business, and had the opportunity (albeit only a 15 minute opportunity) to visit Models Imon. I wish I had an hour or two to browse, and I wish Nik could have been there (he was very jealous). I managed to jam a couple of things into my already over-stuffed carry-on bag. Nik made honor roll his first semester in middle school, and I've been doing a lot of business travel lately, so it seemed like adequate justification to me MicroAce Kintetsu Series 23000 `Ise Shima Liner` and the MicroAce Shiki 810 + Yo 8000 set. This is an incredibly cool set. Watching it go around on the Kato superelevated curves is amazing. An incredibly smooth running car for its length. Link to comment
David
I got my EH500 and Wamu 38000 cars (Kato). I also have the redesigned Tomix DE10 (JRF design) I will post some photos once I make them. I haven't had it apart ...much... yet. My earlier comments about a puzzle box have become a jinx. Tomix seems to have tried to make their own version of Kato's shock absorbing design. Picking it up feels very delicate because almost nothing you can touch to directly clipped to the metal frame, and the shell is at least 6 seperate pieces by my count so far (the walkway/undercarriage is terrifying). Detail is suburb even without the stack of detail parts in the box. The cab looks very nice (part of the cab roof and glass come off seperately to give access). I need to lay out some track before I can comment on running quality. I think adding DCC to this will be a challenge of space - from what little of the frame I could expose at this point it seems to be an intricate mesh of pickup slots and other spaces, not a solid lump you can just mill away at. quinntopia
My little projects arrived.... This is actually my second try with both of these buildings/kits. I've had time to think about what to do differently and some inspiration, so going to try something new. The below, on the other hand (already posted this on another thread), is a kit (Not a kit, a scratch built!) I ordered from Yahoo! Japan...really happy with the look/quality of this, especially at the price I got it for (1600 yen)! Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
Quinn, that's a LOT of 2104's =) I've added this fella to my pre-orders list: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10139110 .. Rather like how mean it looks, I mean, add some cannons here and there and you have a guncar .. (Of course, I'm not gonna do that, since I already have a guncar ;)) I do wonder if it's motorized though, not that it makes much of a difference. Edit: Seems my 2 World Kougei kits got delivered today, unfortunately I won't be home for another 7-8 hours or so to check them out ;) Link to comment
marknewton
Had quite a few days of overtime recently, so I ordered a grab-bag of stuff. I'm hoping to have some time off from work soon, so I can do a bit of serious modelling. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10069330 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10137904 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10138125 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10129915 I thought the tori lanterns could be useful even though they are N-scale. westfalen
My Cassiopeia arrived today, it was shipped by HS on 29th December, SAL can be slow sometimes, I wish there was something in between it and EMS. The train seems to have no new tooling as the end cars are not DCC ready as was the latest Hokutosei release, however it is still a very eye catching train, if there is one thing Kato knows how to do it is representing stainless steel. The EF510 looks good in the Cassiopeia colours too. Link to comment

scott
Since my fearless 8-year-old leader set our direction, we have a Tomix farmhouse and two used buildings (a traditional-looking house and a corner shop) on the way. I'm going to try to scratchbuild and kitbash as much as I can, but it'll be nice to have a few buildings in place. Link to comment

keitaro
So I ordered some trees from the tree factory to see what they are like. The trees are all right ... as being I could have made better One quirk I have which really pisses me off this the retarded way in which it was packed and shipped. They tossed them in a box with some bubble wrap on top and botton and tossed the trees in the box mixed up all together. Which is just stupid so because of heat etc and or moisture the glue melted and all of the trees are stuck together to different colour trees because the glue softened and hardened back up so I spent a good 30 minutes carefully breaking them apart. Plus now the fruit trees I ordered have lost some fruit and cross polinated with other trees.... I think that just deterred me from buing from them again .... guess I should have spent tedious amounts of time making my own. Link to comment
