angusmclean
I think you will agree that if you were relying on these holes to supply the firebox with combustion air, the fire would go out rather quickly.! I would. It's just that there is usually a glow from these holes which could be represented by orange paint on the model. Can you paint them on your C56? Angus Link to comment
scott
I shouldn't have, but I caved when I saw that HS had the Kato green-striped Niigata 115 (10-583) on sale. So now I have a second one on the way--it'll be nice to either run a double set or have two sets going at the same time. And now I see that they're out of stock and back to regular price, so phew! angusmclean
Firebox door air vents 'Erected above the grate and immediately below the first row of tubes, the arch slopes upwards towards the firehole door. Its purpose is to direct unburnt gases towards the firehole door to mix with air entering there to ensure complete combustion. The brick arch works in conjunction with a baffle plate fitted in the firehole door; this directs air into the path of the flame and gases to complete combustion and burn off excessive smoke. Further, the baffle plate directs the relatively cold air entering the firebox away from the tube plate.' Quote extracted from a UK steam loco preservation site. Yup. Doors are sometimes opened to encourage a draught, sometimes when the loco is at rest but butterfly doors are there to keep down the cold air entering when topping up the firebed. Presumably the vent hole sizes are designed to a specific recipe for optimum air mixture to encourage the final burn of carbon laden smoke. Angus Link to comment

Martijn Meerts
My Kato series 151 base set and add on, Kato GS-4, and the Sankei Totoro house kit got shipped today. Knowing customs here though, I'll have to wait about 3-4 weeks before it arrives, and that's with EMS ... Looking forward to seeing the 151 bonnet first hand, and obviously the GS-4 is going to be quite a sight :) Link to comment
cteno4
My Dr Tokai just showed up. nicely detailed! it had been waiting for the dd53 snow plow as they were to be released about the same time and i preordered them together at hw, but finally decided to split the shipment for fear the dr tokai might get lost in the shuffle waiting for the plow! hw is really great at holding stuff till the whole order is in though! they are nice about splitting the order though and also combining orders. cheers jeff Link to comment

(Edit: Fixed giant pictures down to a reasonable size) The Rapido CN coach looks good with the lights on, dad has a UP version from them that has the whole side of the car glow when the lights are on. A couple of packages with decoders and lighting kits for my DD51's and Hoketosi cars made it through between the Christmas and New Year post office shut downs so I'll have something to do over the long weekend. spacecadet
I just ordered the Kato 10-570 and 10-571 basic and add-on "A" Joban line set. Also a few sets of the Tomytec "the humans" people. This is my first order from Hobby Search. Does anybody know if the E-531 Joban line set is DCC friendly? I'm still running DC but just planning for the future. Link to comment

Bernard
I don't have the Joban line but taking a look at Kato's design of the train (which is typical of their passenger lines) I would say it will be easy to install a decoder in the future. Link to comment

This train is in HO scale fitted with a sound decorder with automatic registration system unlike other Japanese trains which there is no sound decorder equipped and when you equipped the Kato or Tomix trains with DCC decorders , you will have to register the locomotive) yourself. That 's what makes Marklin expensive... "The easy to understand Multifunctional Digital system and the automatic or Semi automatic registration system(MFX or FX system) makes a piece of Marklin locomotive expensive.. Cheers Chan Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
Well.. I have analog Marklin locomotives that cost about the same as 10 Kato/Tomix locomotives, so it's really not just the sound and mfx that makes them expensive. I find Marklin to be a hit and miss affair. I have some Marklin locomotives that are absolutely amazing (Big Boy, GT2 4x4), and I have others that are not worth the money spent on them (ICE2, Mickey Mouse train), and then there's the questionable ones, like the BR103 which is absolutely amazing looks wise, apart from the 2 ugly screws on top that hold the shell in place =) Regardless, the trains always do seem to run extremely well. Lol..You mean this one.. (Mickey Mouse train) @Martijn.. Of course , ICE 2 is not a nice model in my opinion as well.. It is a waste of money. But I must say that Marklin 's high price is due to its good quality control and reliable running system.. The box may not be as nice or as classy as Microace , Tomix or Kato 's but the reliable running system is there.. :) Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
Yep, that's the Mickey train =) It looks great, runs well too, but the motor noise is terrible. I've converted it to digital and the newer 5 pole motor type, but it really sounds like a 30 year old Lima locomotive on a bad day =) Their quality control isn't what it used to be anymore actually, they have issues quite regularly. I guess it's because they've been fighting bankruptcy for so long now, they just let some things slip through once in a while. Actually, I think Marklin really needs to rethink their strategy, because the banks are getting sick and tired of not getting their money, and there's no investors willing to spend any money on the brand anymore. From what I've heard, if Marklin doesn't start turning a profit within a year, they might close shop completely, which would be a shame. Link to comment

Yes, it is one of Kato's "DCC Friendly" trains. I just opened mine up to double check. Also, as someone else noted a while back, you can check the Japanese Kato Site's stock page (if you end up on an English description, click the "Japanese" link to get that version; this page for the E531). If it's DCC Friendly it will say "DCCフレンドリー " on the page. You'll need to click on the red arrow in the description to see the additional text that includes this. For some reason they don't always include this on the English pages (and I've seen it omitted from the Japanese ones a time or two). Link to comment
