Fifteen (yes, 15) of the new Tomytec yellow taxis.  OK, a few are for Jeff but 10 are already on the layout adding to the 4 which I already had.  It is beginning to look like a real city with reasonable fleets of white and yellow taxis.  Now, if they would just issue a green version.

My Tomix Oito Line Kiha 52's arrived today from HS,  one Red/Cream (Powered) and one plain Red (dummy).  The Red one came with a small sheet of numbers, are they ordinary waterslide transfers or stickers ala Kato?  Needless to say I'm very pleased with them and am considering buying the 3 car Oito Line set that HS have in stock.

Just to show I'm not biased toward any particular country I've got one of these on the way.

NICE. Although I have to say I prefer the Deltic in BR Green... but in any color, definitely one of the more impressive Diesels around.

I've always liked the prototype deltic, so much so that I went to Locomotion at Shilden when I was in the UK mainly to see the real thing, while I was drooling over Bachmann's OO model in the gift shop at York museum I decided if they did it in N scale I was getting one.

I'm still waiting for a bunch of buildings I've bought of ebay. Mostly duplicates of ones I already have so I can kitbash them. :D  That's all I can do right now is build my structures as I'm not in a place yet where I can build my layout. Maybe in a couple of years. That said I have a whole lot of buildings to build still for my city layout...so work is work....gotta get er done! :D

My only major purchase plans from now really is to do a big CMR order in the New Year. I want the remaining 5 buildings plus add on kits to them...so It'll be a bit on the expensive side...but I really want those buildings. I really like them.

The new Kato D51 498 arrived today, beautiful is the only word to describe it, Kato's pictures don't do it justice. Now I'm waiting for MB Klein to send my sound decoder for it, the tender is designed to take an MRC 1637 decoder and speaker.

How does it run? Better than the Tomix C57?

Hi Westfalen,  Have you give it a run yet, from what I've read, it's supposed to something quite special!  I'm still waiting for mine, it's due anytime, this week, I hope!

I'm waiting for my D51 from HS . I think it may cause the same reaction as did the Tomix C57 late last year. It will make the other steam locos look out of scale!!!!!

Exceptions are the Micro Ace 9600 and Kato 9600 although that is 1/144 and the Micro Ace D52.  I might be able to get away with the C50s and the 4110 0-10-0T but will have to be careful with placement.

Just ordered a MicroAce C55 Streamline Improved

Now I just have to find some matching passenger cars to go with it.

.... and probably figure out a way to convert it to a knuckle coupler, so it plays nice with the rest of my stuff.

[Edit:  I didn't read the dates correctly, looks like it'll be coming much sooner!]

Kato's E259 new Narita Express (10-821, the original 6-car set) just arrived, along with a second Micro Ace Sobu E231.

I'd had other trains on my mind when this and the second version (10-847/10-848) first went up for reservation, and then the original had been sold out by the time I was thinking of getting it a few months ago (I could have got one elsewhere, I suspect; I didn't look too hard). The it restocked briefly at HS last week and I ordered one.  It went out of stock briefly, now its back in stock again (I'm getting dizzy just watching HS).

HS noted in their blog last month that the new set differs from the old one by having a different number pre-printed on the train, so for a prototypical 6+6 set you need one of each, not two of either.  Hopefully I'll be able to snag one of the new ones when it comes out next month.

And, if anyone's interested, although the Kato website and the text on HS don't mention DCC at all, the manual notes that it's DCC Friendly. It also has a switch in one of the DCC cab sockets, so if you want to run two of them coupled (on DC or DCC without an unnecessary cab decoder), you can turn off the cab lights of the inside cabs.

It's a beautiful train, but those dark-tinted windows cry out for interior lighting kits to be added.

I don't have a Tomix C57 to compare it to but it runs very smoothly on D.C. We have a club meeting on Sunday so I'll give it a proper run then, I only have a test track set up at home at the moment.

I received a bunch of DCC decoders (6 Digitrax DZ123, 1 Digitrax DN163K0a, 3 Tams FD-R Basic (function decoder)), a Märklin 6604 Delta Control (= cheap DDX-Booster, 1 Euro + shipping on ebay), and I pre-ordered the Kato E5 (this will be my first shinkansen).

Apart from the amazing (for N scale) detail, check out the fully-floating second and third driving axles on a rough piece of track!!!!

I'm disappointed that there are no painted faces of the guages in the cab - or even a hint of orange in the firebox vent holes :) About the only things I can think of which would help, is a separate tender ladder and a coupling release bar at the rear of the tender.  The later is on the front of the loco, and appears on other Kato locos as well. Spare parts like this to super-detail a loco would be handy.

I'm surprised the rear headlight and marker lights don't work. I had mine running at the club for a couple of hours this afternoon hauling 21 assorted Japanese steam era freight cars (all I took with me) and they run as good as they look. I might try a small brush and add a touch of colour to some of the cab fittings to pick out a bit of detail and add a driver and fireman as well now they don't have to share the cab with a motor.

Firebox vent holes??? What are they?  ??? ??? ???

Incidentally, I succumbed to temptation, and ordered a Kato C56...

Jeez Mark, keep up with the play:)  They're the little holes in the clam-shell doors of the firebox that help feed air into the fire!! (hurriedly consulting books for photos of firebox doors)

If you're talking about butterfly firehole doors, then those holes aren't for feeding air into the fire. Primary combustion air comes from under the grates, via the ashpan and its dampers. You regulate your secondary combustion air coming over the top of the fire through the firehole by opening or closing the door.

All those holes in the firehole doors do is let a bit of air through to cool them when they're closed. Each door leaf is in two parts, the bit you can see at the front, and a baffle on the back. There's an air gap between them, allowing air drawn through the holes in the front of the door to circulate between the two parts.

Cheers,

Mark.

D51 firebox 'air vents', or whatever, for letting in the air.

This photo clearly shows the nut that secures the baffle on the rear of the butterfly doors, and the small air circulating holes. I think you will agree that if you were relying on these holes to supply the firebox with combustion air, the fire would go out rather quickly.!  :grin

Oh, yeah, the C56 arrived this afternoon. Lovely little model, but it will have to wait until after Xmas before it gets a run...

Cheers,

Mark.
