What did you order or the post deliver? (Japanese N Gauge)

A couple of things arrived. I did have a slight problem that my order from traintrax got lost in the post. But Keith made good. Unfortunately some of my double track was now out of stock so I'm waiting for a bit. Also my office and wife are both keeping me from continuing.

Also a huge thanks to Eurostar25 as the section of kato bridge section arrived too.

A slight sub-hobby I seem to have developed is acquiring N gauge trains of historical interest (from an N gauge point of view), provided they don't fetch crazy prices, and at 2000 yen this Eidai ED75 was too good to miss:

For a company which operated for about 1 year in 1979 before going bankrupt (part of the range was continued by Gakken), it's a suprisingly good model, to the point I checked underneath that it wasn't something more modern. The motor is a little rough but nothing out of the ordinary.

Continuing the theme of collecting historical N gauge, Spookshow says of the Kato RS-3 "The Atlas/Kato RS-3 represents a watershed moment in N scale history and a huge leap forward in N-scale locomotive design (at least as far as North American prototypes are concerned)" so for a couple of thousand yen was unable to resist:

Not that I had any idea what an RS-3 was before buying this, but I have a weakness for the Union Pacific livery. For a 30+ year old locomotive, it's in excellent condition and is seen here somewhat outside of its normal area of operations.

Just ordered the Kato sound box and the E233 sound card from Amazon Japan! Saved myself $50 compared to the regular Amazon.com. Hope it gets here by Friday! I've been eyeing the sound box for awhile and finally bite the bullet. :)

Ordered a Tomytec Tetsudo Collection Nekoya Line HOn30 KiHa + HoHaFu set, old style.

I need to give my Japanese N scale a dusting, it has been ages since anything has come out of the boxes. Of lately HOn30 has taken priority, what with a friend disposing of his collection, unexpected pieces cropping up at the LHS and sudden ideas on how to convert N scale cars into HOn30 ones. Only this week I absorbed two new locomotives - a Roco Feldbahn diesel and a Chivers Finelines Baldwin 0-4-2ST (built by Peter Bartlett of Cray Valley Railroad fame); the second engine is my "prodigal son", I bought it a decade or so ago, sold it to a friend not long after and now it has passed back into my fold. I also made its abominable Bachmann Dockside mech behave (somewhat) better, but it still needs at least a new motor...if not a new mech (this time the N Drive one, please...).

Cheers NB

Something British and new at a special Currency Crash discount :D - a Class 33 in BR blue from Dapol pretending to be the Weymouth Boat Train:

A Class 33 (from Lima, in HO), was my first proper model train ever so I had to get one.

Very evocative 'squid. Is that a cheeky bit of Wilts and Dorset hiding in the background?

The prodigal son...

DSC_0661.jpg

Both it and the Roco diesel could be used in a Japanese context - paint the locos in appropriate colours, hang a nice polished brass shamon on the cab side and you are set up. It would be very easy to imagine this loco scurrying across paddy fields with a couple of coaches in tow (a la Semboku Tetsudo) or cautiously drifting downgrade along a steep valley with a long string of groaning log buggies filled with sugi trailing behind (think Kiso).

Cheers NB

Suica.

That 5000 series is stunning! I might have to add a set ,at some stage, to my Odakyu line up when my credit card has recovered and when our dollar is not looking so sick against the Yen.

To be honest, I still have to get used to its external appearance. But I rode it in Japan, so the model goes in the collection. :)

That Odakyu 50000 VSE is one of my favorite trains. Definitely a keeper and a looker when it runs!

That E351 add-on set is interesting... but my new layout cant accommodate more than 8 cars now...

Gotta love these British locos, this one went over a point earlier, there was a spark and some visible, acrid smoke which was evidently one set of directional lights bidding adieu. This is the 3rd new Dapol loco where something has gone wrong with the electrics out of the box...

I don't believe it... in my craziness I went ahead to pre-order the 800 series... again... Felt like slapping myself as to why I sold my 800 series away in the first place and only to buy it back again in the future...

Bright side up, it does have power couplers....

The only Shinkansen series I was missing (formations aside, I have the 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 700, N700 series) so I guess it would be dumb to give this up...

I have a 800-1000 series.  So getting the -2000 makes sense, doesn't it?  Still trying to find a -0 series on the cheap.  Although, don't really need 3x 800s. haha

Oh dear. I am always tempted by some of the lovely looking new releases, but time and time again there are issues which put me off. I converted to Japanese N in 2008 partly due to the suspect quality of British models. 8 years on it seems little has changed.

Very hit-and-miss still - Dapol with the electrics, Farish with split gears. I actually find it's more reliable to buy 2nd-hand locomotives from reputable sellers as these have survived the "QA'd by the customer" process. I'm too far away to want the hassle of sending these expensive new models back. Grr. And it looks so nice too.

now go hunt the Acela and HHP8 from bachmann. :D

and AEM7 too.

Got my HHP-8 locos today and with typical Bachmann quality, one of them is a turd (650) and died after 5 minutes (it's a Spectrum too). Kind of ironic how poorly they performed for Amtrak.

Hopefully Trainworld takes care of me and I don't have to ship off to Bachmann for repair.

What's a Spectrum? Not familiar with North America Bachmann locos.

Keeping up the foreign theme, 6 axles of solid Fleischmann Made-in-Germany reliablity for a song via Yahoo Auctions - it could be anything between 20 and 40 years old, though I suspect 20~25.

Spectrum is their "premium" line - many come pre-equipped with DCC.
